He was my math instructor and the man is GOD sent in many compacities. When we as African Americans get jealous of one another or we just decide that we are no longer going to kiss butt, this is what happens. Nothing good ever comes out of situations like these. Ask Orangeburg Four, they got a habbit of firing for no apparent reason and everyone one they fired without a probabel cause their position has gone lacking in the worst way. GOD don't Bless mess. Get it together black people and stop giving other schools, the media, and other people something to talk about. swallow your pride and give the man his job back; now you want to do something, get rid of Maurice!!!!! I think Hugine has done a fantastic job in catching SCSU up with other institutions. If academics was the problem, I don't think he should have been dismissed like that without being given a chance to fix it. I feel for the student that did not have a room or a meal plan, but the reason enrollment went up is because Dr. Hugine made that campus beautiful and attracted students there. Let's see who they get next because the two before him did nothing! " |

It is the many dedicated faculty, staff and students that makes the university. Not one man, and not buildings. I agree with the writer who said you need to get the facts before you start speaking out. It is these idiotic comments from the alumni without knowing the facts that has a bad reflection on the University. The things you give him credit for would have happened regardless of who was in that position. " |

To date, there hasn't been any disclosure of the report(s)mentioned as the basis for this firing. And unless and until they are fully disclose for all to see, I still contend those who had in hand in the ousting of the Prez under the cover of darkness are cowards! " |

Better to be thought a fool than speak and make is sooooo obvious. As an alumuni of O.W.('74) and S.C State('78)it is disturbing to see that my second home town embroiled again in a media circus of a negative note. I just watched Tom Brokaw talk about Orangeburg on the History Channnel and here we are almost 40 years later in the news again for the wrong reason. As a Metro Atlanta resident with relatives in Orangeburg I am STILL loyal to the university. The board is symptomatic of a group of elites connected to the univerities who continue to operate as if we were in the 1940's or 50's. S.C. STATE is not the Normal School for Coloreds any more. Get over it. Lose your sense of entitlement Mr. Washington and give it up before it is broadcast all over the world that you only represent yourself and not the good people of S.C. State or Orangeburg. You are a disgrace!!!. " |

kearndigga wrote on Dec 12, 2007 6:20 PM: " Being that Dr. Hugine was my former teacher I am sad to see him ousted especially in an unsightly and unprofessional matter. Under his watch the school has blossomed with new construction and more funding. And, as displeased as I am with the manner in which this was handled, I personally would like to refrain from passing judgement on who is "RIGHT" or "WRONG" in this matter. We Alumni have been kept primarily in the dark on this subject. I would feel more comfortable if I knew the INTEREST behind the Board's removal of Hugine. If we had the same information the Board had, then we could see if this indeed was the best decision for SCSU. With all the good that we have "seen" we do not know the "bad" that may or may not have taken place during Hugine's watch. Is he deserving of the credit we place upon him? Was he mostly responsible for the new construction, increased funding, Presidental debate, hundreds of students accepted to State WITHOUT a place for them to stay, the parents/students that were escorted from the Administration office by police because of the housing situation? Does he deserve to be fired? These are questions I can not, in good faith, begin to answer without all of the facts laid out before me. But, I can say that it is a shame to see our "business" displayed for all of SC and the nation to see. " |

If Mr. Maurice Washington has performance, professional or ethincal issues we are unaware of, they will come out. Just shut up and stop making the University look bad with all these stupid comments based on gossip and no facts. Once the facts come out, then idiots, comment on the facts, not the gossip. " |

I call for the entire student body-all of them to do a University walk out. Meaning no attendance of classes until Dr. Hugine is reinstated as president of the University. I call for all students to conduct a march at the state capital in protest of the board's decision. Rememeber your tuition pays the salery of the board and your taxes pay the salery of everyone at the capital. This is the JENA 1 with no jail time and no white people. I would also contact MSNBC to cover the protest since they have a relationhip with SCSU. I am emailing Chirs Matthews at MSNBC right now. " |

As a youth growing up in O’bug and a graduate of SCSU I have seen the administration emerge from the good ol boy days to a truly professionally managed organization. Unless this board has undisclosed information not yet released to the general public Dr. Hugine’s Performance Evaluation over the course his administrative term should be nothing less than Outstanding. I would like see the SC legislature launch an investigation into the Boards (emphasizing Mr. Washington) actions with any finding of miscarriage of justice leading to the ousting of Mr. Washington and others.
