Fishing on Lake Marion and her sister Lake Moultrie can be an experience. These man-made lakes are the result of many years of work from the South Carolina Public Service Authority. Beginning in 1939, the two lake system was created and joined by a 6.5 mile diversion canal. Completed in 1942, the over 170,000 acres of water have become a world class fishing destination and the host lakes for several national fishing tournaments. Cabela's Crappie USA and King Kat tournaments were recently held in Santee. The lakes vary from shallow swamps and black water ponds to vast open water with many underwater structures. Since there are still many cypress trees and stumps in Lake Marion, you will find excellent places to catch large fish. many record catches have been recorded on Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie which has more open water space. At its widest point, Lake Moultrie is 14 miles across. These lakes offer year around fishing opportunities. The weather is temperate and the lakes do not ice over in the winter months. You can hook bream, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, white bass and the famous striped bass in the freshwaters of Lakes Marion and Moultrie. There is also the Santee State Park available for a great family adventure. Located in the heart of Santee-Cooper Country with convenient access from two interstate highways, this 2,496-acre park offers land and pier-based cabins, as well as two lakefront camping areas. A sportsman's paradise, this park is known for its catfish, largemouth and striped bass fishing, and is the site of numerous fishing tournaments. The Village Round meeting building is ideal for group functions.
