CAMERON -- SCE&G representatives told members of the Cameron Town Council Monday night the utility would have natural gas service available within two weeks for those residents who already have their lines installed.

SCE&G sales representative Gus Chapman said he will make questionnaires available to all residents by April 15 to see what additional gas lines will be needed. He said service would be available for those interested by this fall.

Mayor Marion Black told council members he met with a S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism representative, and the inspector had no safety concerns about the tennis court. It has been accepted and is now in use.

Black said since service from Mallard Cable Television Co. has not improved, the town is investigating the possibility of obtaining service from Time-Warner Cable when the current contract expires in June.

The town of Cameron will sponsor its annual yard sale starting at 7 a.m. May 3. Donations will be solicited for the Cameron Volunteer Fire Department. For additional information, contact Cameron Town Hall.

Repairs to the heating system in the town hall did not hold up, so the town clerk will continue to investigate replacement of the heating system. Since the air conditioning is operable, a thorough investigation will be conducted over the next few months. Using natural gas is an option.

The possibility of the town installing a sewer system is still being considered, and the council "is still looking for a system that would be cost effective for a small town," Black said.

The alternative offered by Kevin Stricklin would cost about $2.25 million, with a minimum annual cost of $90,000.

Black also reported sidewalk repairs had been made by the S.C. Department of Transportation, and residents were asked to contact town hall if they had sidewalks in need of repair.

Fire Chief Charles Polin reported that for February, his department had four fire calls and two alarms including one flooded house and one vehicle fire.

Police Chief Chris Hales reported issuing 18 tickets and making three arrests: one driving under suspension, one assault and one possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Officers answered 11 in-town calls, three sheriff's assists, two EMS calls, one assist to the Elloree Police Department, three assists to the S.C. Highway Patrol and two assists to the St. Matthews Police Department.

The financial report for the period ending March 31 showed revenues of $7,234.46, expenses of $15,496.40, a checking account balance of $38,805.64 and a savings account of $40,350.96, for a total balance of $79,156.60.
