The Board of Directors of the Lower Savannah Council of Governments will honor a Congressman during a board meeting Thursday, April 17, in Orangeburg.

Ronnie Young, chairman of the LSCOG board, will present a Congressional Partnership Award to Rep. Joe Wilson at the meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Tourville Lodge.

Congressional Partnership Awards are presented biennially by the National Association of Development Organizations to members of Congress who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting regional economic development policies.

Wilson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on behalf of the people of the Second District of South Carolina on Dec. 18, 2001, following the death of long-time Congressman Floyd Spence. The next day, he was sworn in during a ceremony at the Capitol.

Since taking office, Wilson was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

"Congressman Wilson is helping our local communities compete in today's marketplace, even in the face of economic hardships," Young said. "He has been a strong advocate of grassroots-based programs, such as the Economic Development Administration, that are helping rural America achieve more economic prosperity."
