COLUMBIA -- A Dorchester man was sentenced in federal court Wednesday after a change of hearing plea focusing on a computer sales scam.

Daniel M. Haynes, 21, was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment and 3 years supervised release for mail fraud.

U.S. District Judge David C. Norton of Charleston was presiding on the bench.

Evidence presented at the hearing established that from June 2001 through May 2002, Haynes executed a scheme to post personal computers for auction on an Internet auction site. Haynes claimed to sell the computers at a discount.

Instead, Haynes took the customers' money and failed to render any products. The sales proceeds were sent to Haynes through the United States mail.

There are more than 100 victims, and the loss exceeds $160,000.
