Give a child a book
By ALICE BAKER, T&D Correspondent Tuesday, January 25, 2005The Orangeburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are giving hundreds of children a book in hopes of fostering a love of reading and learning.
The sorority has an Arts and Letters Program which includes its "Give a Child a Book" initiative.
Through the educational initiative, members make an annual trip to one of the elementary schools in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 and read books to the children before leaving books for placement in the school's library.
Promoting cultural activities and events for the organization and the community is the purpose of the sorority's Arts and Letters program committee.
Sorority members visited Brookdale Elementary School last year, where they read books to an inquisitive group of students. This year, members will take its "Give a Child a Book" initiative to Rivelon Elementary School. Books will be read to the children and left for the library beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, in the media center.
The initiative also allows community members the opportunity to read a chosen book to students. The school is donated 15 to 20 books for the media center.
The Arts and Letters committee also sponsor other activities during the year. The committee sponsors its Kuumba Expo during December. Kuumba is Swahili for creativity and is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
