DID YOU HEAR: Local man once Terrell Owens' QB in Tennessee

As the Super Bowl approaches, and the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to take on the New England Patriots, a question concerning Philadelphia's receiver Terrell Owens and his broken ankle still hangs in the balance.

Will he play hurt? Will he risk his future for the big game? If he does, will he make a difference?

Kenyon Earl, insurance adjuster for Farm Bureau Insurance in Orangeburg, has some inside scoop since he was quarterback on the now famous receiver's team at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

"Terrell knows his body, and he knows what he can and cannot do," Earl said. "Some guys only get one opportunity to play in a Super Bowl, so he will take full advantage."

"I graduated in 1994, so I finished before he became the star you see today," Earl said. "He started coming into his own during his junior season."

Owens was pretty much the same guy that is playing in the league today, he said.

"When it comes to Terrell, what you see is what you get," Earl said. "He doesn't shy away from giving his opinion."

Earl remembers seeing the freshman Owens hit campus as a gangly 6-2, 185-pound receiver, but said that he never saw anyone work as hard as Owens did.

"By his junior season he had bulked up to 212 pounds and was running a 4.4 forty," Earl said. "He has an amazing work ethic and still put up good numbers his senior season despite the constant double teams."
