CHARLESTON — Keith Hewitt, president of Orangeburg's Keith Hewitt Insurance Agency Inc., a State Farm insurance company, spoke to students in the MBA program's capstone course on Tuesday.

Hewitt emphasized the importance of having a strategic business plan, admitting that when he first started out as an agent in 1971, shortly after receiving a business and marketing degree from CSU, he didn't have a true business plan.

"You've got to have something to work towards, to go to work for every day," he explained. "The more contacts you have, the more opportunities [for business] you have. "You know that old saying, 'it's not what you know, it's who you know.' These days, it's who knows you."

The seminar course, taught by CSU President Dr. Jairy C. Hunter Jr., is designed to help students learn about strategic planning and management from business leaders with years of experience in those areas.

A 1971 graduate of Charleston Southern, Hewitt is also a partner in Gateway Hospitality Inc., based in Columbia.

For more information on the CSU MBA program, call Dr. Bill Bowers at 863-7908, or e-mail wbowers@csuniv.edu.
