The U.S. Army on Thursday announced that Spec. Naeem Williams, 25, has been charged with murder in the death of his 5-year-old daughter.

Williams, formerly of Orangeburg, has been held in "pretrial confinement" by the U.S. Army in Hawaii since the death of Talia Williams on July 16. Court records indicate the child was beaten by Williams. Her stepmother, Delilah Williams, is facing federal murder charges in the case.

The child's birth mother, Tarshia Williams of Orangeburg, is presently engaged in a battle to have the child's body returned to South Carolina for burial.

There was no word Thursday of new developments.

The Army's 25h Infantry Division announced that Naeem Williams is charged with murder, conspiracy, false official statement, aggravated assault, assault upon a child and obstruction of justice.

"The Army will continue to conduct a thorough, fair and unbiased investigation," according to a prepared statement.
