ST. GEORGE -- A 32-year old reserve Dorchester County deputy sheriff was killed early Saturday in a head-on collision on U.S. Hwy. 178, near Shady Grove community, St. George.

Keith R. Burns of St. George died at Trident Medical Center from injuries sustained in the 2:44 a.m. accident.

Burns was alone, traveling west on U.S. Hwy. 178 toward Bowman, when his vehicle was struck head on by an east-bound vehicle that had pulled out to pass the car in front of it, said Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Dorchester County Deputy Coroner Alice Durr reported that the unidentified driver of the other vehicle and his passenger both were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Authorities say that alcohol may have been a factor.

Because Burns was a reserve Dorchester County deputy and his brother is a local South Carolina highway trooper, the wreck is being handled by the Charleston County Sheriff's Department.

The wreck is still under investigation.
