MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The South Carolina State University women’s golf team captured its first tournament title in the short history of the program by carding a 36-hole total ofˇ651 to finish first in the four-team Alabama State Fall Classic held Monday and Tuesday at the Cypress Tree East Course.
The S.C. State men finished fourth in a nine-team field with a 36-hole total of 623.
Two newcomers led the way for first-year head coach Herman Belton’s Lady Bulldogs, whose program is in only its fourth year of intercollegiate competition. Sophomore Addi McLaren of Canada, and freshman Genevahad identical 36-hole totals of 157 (76-81). Junior Shanicka Roberts had a 167 (82-85) and Jennie McCollom, also a junior, a 170 (88-82). Also competing for SC State was sophomore Danielle Williams, who was at 182 (94-88).
Second in the field, 41 strokes behind the Lady Bulldogs, was Alcorn State with a 36-hole total of 692. Savannah State was third at 1000, followed by host Alabama State at 1015.
The Bulldogs, second after 18 holes with a 312, carded a final-round total of 311 for a 36-holel total of 621 in nabbing fourth, behind Southern, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Faulkner 1.
Freshman Hector Arroyave spearheaded the effort of Coach Richard Arrington’s team with a 36-hole total of 152 (75-77), followed by Corey Jozifiak at 156 (78-78), Robert Biggers at 157 (77-80) and Aaron Robinson at 159 (82-77). Also participating for S.C. State on the men’s side was Trevor Pleasant with a 163 (83-80).

Branchville to victory
KaAnn Murray had 20 points, nine aces and 12 assists as Branchville defeated Colleton County 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-13).
Sina Tuchscheerer had 11 points, three aces and three kills for Branchville, Faron Wolfe added a triple-double of 10 points, 10 assists and 10 kills along with five aces and Kaitlin Felder added nine kills.
Branchville hosts a tri-match with Cross and Baptist Hill today.
Colleton Prep won the JV match 25-11, 25-6. The Branchville JV team (4-2) plays at Lake Marion Tuesday.

tops Woodland
SANTEE – Lake Marion defeated Woodland 3-2 in varsity volleyball Wednesday, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10.
Raenita Clark had 26 points to lead the Lady Gators (6-5, 2-0) along with Ashley Wright, 11 points; Samantha Martin, 10 kills; and Laytavia Mack, nine kills.
Sharetha Benefield had a solid all-around game in the loss for Woodland with 24 points, three aces, 13 spikes, five blocks and three kills. Brittany Smith added 10 assists and Loretta Benefield had five blocks.
Woodland (5-4, 3-0) plays Edisto today. Lake Marion plays Stall and Timberland Monday in a tri-match at Lake Marion.
The Woodland JV team defeated Lake Marion 2-0. Bobbie Blake had 13 points.
n B-team Lady Jackets defeat OP
BRANCHVILLE – Branchville defeated Orangeburg Prep in B-team volleyball Wednesday, 23-25, 25-10, 25-18.
Leading Branchville (5-0) on the court were Miranda Nichols with 11 points, seven aces and one kill; Stephany Hughes, 14 points, seven aces; and Jaimie Harrison had four kills.
The B-team Lady Indians were led by Shiloh Burgreen with 11 points and three kills; Kaitlyn Gardner, five points; Haley Bozard, four points; Jade Brandenberg and Rachel Morrell, three points each; and Amy Woodrum, two points.
Branchville plays at home Monday against Forest Circle. The OPS varsity team is in action today at 5 p.m.
n B-E claims region

BAMBERG – Bamberg-Ehrhardt claimed the Region 5-A tennis title Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Williston-Elko.
B-E improves to 6-0 and hosts Fox Creek Monday.
