A South Carolina State University student suffered a fractured ankle Wednesday as he was trying to retrieve personal property that fell into an elevator shaft, according to Erica Prioleau, director of university relations and marketing.

“It appears from a preliminary internal investigation that the student entered an unauthorized area on campus,” Prioleau said.

“He was injured as he was trying to retrieve some personal property that fell into an elevator shaft” in the Mays II dormitory, she added.

The student remained in a hospital Thursday, she said.

State law requires elevator owners to report any accident involving a fatality or serious injury to the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, said Jim Knight, LLR’s director of communications and governmental affairs.

“Serious injury is defined as one that requires hospitalization,” Knight said, adding that LLR will check into the incident.

" It's funny, because this seems to an article to bring some unnecessary attention, to a school where people are already expecting failure. "

" The title of the article is VERY misleading. I too was under the impression that it was a malfunction of the elevator that caused the injury when it was actually the student's own negligence. "

" To the T&D reporter and editor, The title of this report is misleading. My first impression was that the elevator malfunctioned leading to the injury when said injury was a result of the students own negligence. T&D, come on now, is this really news? "
