T&D Staff Report

The Orangeburg County Development Commission received an honorable mention for its Global Logistics Triangle advertising campaign at the International Economic Development Council Annual Conference in New York City.

The conference was held Sept. 17-20.

Orangeburg County competed in the Paid Publication Advertising Campaign by organizations serving areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000.

The IEDC cited the commission’s vision for the Global Logistics Triangle and its marketing campaign through an advertising quad located in the Columbia Metropolitan Airport as a highlight of its success.

The marketing piece has been at the airport’s baggage-claim area for the past eight months. The Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the advertisement.

The OCDC is also looking to have a 7-foot-by-4-foot marketing piece in the airport’s main concourse. The chamber, Claflin University, South Carolina State University and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College will sponsor the advertisement campaign.

OCDC Executive Director Gregg Robinson says the foot traffic that comes across the advertisements are an ideal way to make Orangeburg and its industrial progress better known.

“It is a measurement tool,” Robinson said. “We are being measured against communities of similar size.”

Robinson explained that the advertising campaign is a tribute to a number of different organizations working together.

“All benefit from economic development and we partner with many people to help showcase what Orangeburg County has to offer.”

“The acknowledgement serves as a most respectful ’hats off’ to economic development organizations like the Orangeburg County Development Commission for leading the charge,” said Joseph A. Marinucci, IEDC chairman. “From localized community projects to large-scale endeavors, activities for the advancement of economic development have an enormous impact on the shoring up of the nation’s economy. As our population grows exponentially and as we continue to overcome unexpected challenges, such as those we are still grappling with in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast region, these efforts take on an even greater significance.”

The IEDC cited the “village concept development” at the three interchanges formed by Interstate 95, U.S. 301 and Interstate 26.

“The village concept, which includes industrial, commercial and residential spaces, allows for development to occur within a 1- to 2-mile radius,” the IEDC noted.

The International Economic Development Council is headquartered in Washington. Its mission is to provide leadership and excellence in economic development for communities, members and partners.

IEDC’s professional economic development awards annually recognize excellence in the economic development profession.
