T&D Staff Report

Cox Industries Inc., the company founded in Orangeburg, is set to open a new manufacturing and treating plant this fall and will bring new job opportunities for the Tuscaloosa area.

Cox Wood of Alabama, LLC will produce products such as utility poles, piling, structural timbers, and cross arms used by utility companies, energy providers and contractors.

“We are excited about this new opportunity and the ability to rapidly serve the Gulf Coast market,” said Matthew Yaun, corporate development official for Cox Industries. “In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Cox provided over 800 tractor-trailer loads of utility poles and pilings for devastated areas. Now we will be able to act even faster to help in the face of a natural disaster.”

Cox was founded in 1954 in Orangeburg as a wood-preservation company.

The family-owned business has become an industry leader and has grown immensely to include 11 plant locations in the Southeast with the Alabama addition.

Combined, the plants specialize in preservative treated lumber and plywood, marine treated wood, fire retardant treated wood, highway products, millwork, outdoor furniture and a wide variety of utility products.

The facility will be located in Vance, Ala., and will employ approximately 33 people.
