After the fatal gunshots
By THOMAS BROWN, T&D Staff Writer Monday, October 09, 2006BAMBERG -- The Denmark man who had Bamberg County sheriff's deputies out in a full-force manhunt only four days ago came before Bamberg County Chief Magistrate Judge R.C. Threatt on Monday for an initial appearance.
Edward Chauncey Tyler, 31, stood before the judge in the cramped magistrate's office in the Bamberg County Detention Center to be formally charged with the murder of his wife, Roslyn Rogers Tyler, 37, of 1954 Honey Ford Road, Denmark.
Tyler showed no emotion as Threatt read the warrants.
"You are here today on a non-bailable offense," Threatt said. "Magistrates can't set a bond on a murder charge. And murder carries a penalty of life in prison or death."
Edward C. Tyler is accused of shooting his estranged wife on Friday. The two were arguing over a television, Edward Tyler, the father of Edward C. Tyler, said on the scene only hours after the incident occurred.
"He went back in the house and got my gun and shot her," Edward Tyler said. "She fell and he shot her again."
After the shooting, Edward Tyler said his son took Roslyn's car and fled the scene. Sheriff's deputies and Department of Natural Resources officers searched for Edward C. Tyler for several hours. Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell also enlisted the assistance of the helicopter from the State Law Enforcement Division in the search.
"I thought and I told his father he would do one of two things," Darnell said. "He was either going to come back home or go somewhere and commit suicide."
Darnell said he ordered all patrol cars away from Edward Tyler's home.
"About 9:30 (p.m.) his father called me and told me he had come back home and to come and pick him up," Darnell said. "We went out and got him. He was a little uncooperative but he didn't really give us any problem. We brought him in without much trouble."
Bamberg County Coroner Billy Duncan verified Edward Tyler's account of the incident. "The autopsy revealed that she (Roslyn) was shot twice," Duncan said.
Along with the charge of murder, Edward C.Tyler was also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and violating his probation. Threatt denied bond on both of those charges and revoked probation.
Edward C. Tyler was convicted of possession of cocaine, first offense, in May of 2006. He failed to report to his probation officer and failed to pay a fine.
After Threatt conducted the initial appearance for Edward C. Tyler, Caroline Razor from the office of the clerk of court conducted the arraignment on all of the charges.
Gary Brown, director of the Bamberg County Detention Center, said the hearing was held in the jail because of security concerns. Officials thought members of the victim's family would attend the hearing. Threatt waited for approximately 15 minutes before starting the procedure, giving them time to arrive, but Edward Tyler was the only person other than jail officials attending his son's hearing.
No date was set for future appearances.
