Locks of Love

Sisters Jessica and Magdalene Laursen participated in "Pamper Yourself Day" sponsored by the Cosmetology Department of Cope Area Career Center Dec. 9.
The two girls initially planned only on a haircut and style, but decided spontaneously to donate their hair to Locks of Love, which meant cutting off at least 10 inches each.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that uses donated hair to make hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children under age 18 who have suffered from from long-term medical hair loss.
DMost of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The hair prostheses help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
When the sisters came home with their newly cut locks, they visited the Locks of Love website and downloaded an application. They dried and braided the hair, put each lock in a zip-lock bag and sent the hair and applications in a padded envelope to Locks of Love.
Jessica and Magdalene, who feel really good about this chance to help others, donated 11 inches of hair each.
