The Claflin University Pantherettes easily defeated Voorhees College Thursday, 61-44.
The Pantherettes erased a three-point Tiger lead at the half and went on to out-score the Lady Tiger squad 40-20 in the second half to cruise to victory.
Jayshaun Bailey scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Pantherettes. Coach Walker-Samuels enjoyed balanced scoring from Ashley Sorrell-Gibson and Brittany Woods, who added 13 points each. Shontavia Bladen chipped in 11 points as four Pantherettes scored in double figures.
Leading the Lady Tigers offensively were Tammy Harbin with 12 points and Antinesha Wyatt with 10 points.
Claflin came out in the second half and kept the Lady Tigers from scoring until the Pantherettes had taken the lead, 26-24, with 18:02 left in the game. Claflin would never look back as the Pantherettes went on a 12-1 run to go up by nine points, 36-27, with 13:39 left.
The Lady Tigers cut the lead to five points at the 11:52 mark, 36-31. That would be as close as Voorhees would get as Claflin increased their lead to 16 points, 47-31, on an 11-0 run with 6:06 left. The Pantherettes went on to cruise to the 17-point victory.
The Pantherettes will go on the road Saturday to take on Chowan College, in Murfreesboro, N.C., at 3 p.m. Their next home game will take place on Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. in a rematch against Chowan College.
Voorhees will host Flagler College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
