Orangeburg is gearing up for the second annual Garden City Bar-B-Q Cook-Off this weekend at the Orangeburg Mall, an event that promises to bring out some of the best the state has to offer when it comes to a Southern staple.

Ranging from vinegar and pepper-based to mustard, light tomato and heavy tomato varieties, participants and visitors to this year's event will have the opportunity to try some of each of the "Big Four" barbecue types, organizers say.

Orangeburg's cook-off competition marks the first points competition in the Palmetto State for the S.C. Barbeque Association's 2007 season. Last year, 22 teams competed in Orangeburg, with Wando resident Roscoe Kellahan taking top prize.

Barbecue will be judged on tenderness, texture, moisture and flavor.

Contestants will begin the fun from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 with an "Anything But Pork" competition, serving foods like catfish stew, crab cakes and beef brisket. Wristbands will be available for $5, allowing visitors to sample the wide variety of food on display.

On Saturday, Jan. 20, contest judging kicks off at 11 a.m., followed by barbecue plate sales from noon until 4 p.m. Plates are $7 each, with proceeds going to the Shriner's Hospital for Children. Local corporations can also order a delivered barbecue lunch on Monday. For more information, call 803-308-1314.
