Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker placed at Joe Miller Park
By SHIRLEY UPTON, T&D Correspondent Monday, February 26, 2007ELLOREE – The placement of a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker in Elloree was celebrated in a patriotic ceremony on Feb. 20 at Joe Miller Park.
The event was sponsored by the Elloree Garden Club, and the Rev. Fred David of the Elloree United Methodist Church, delivered the invocation and the benediction.
The Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker project was inaugurated by the New Jersey Garden Clubs in 1945, and its name was taken from the blue star in the Service Flag. Garden club members believe the project is a fitting memorial to the servicemen and women who have fought and are fighting for the United States and this country’s way of life. The project is supported by the National Garden Clubs Inc.
Participants were welcomed by Cindy Lane, Blue Star Marker chairperson and president of the Elloree Garden Club. The colors were presented by the Lake Marion High School ROTC Color Guard, led by Sgt. Major Brown.
Adadra Williams of the Elloree Garden Club related the history of the marker, and Mayor Van Stickles asked the audience for a moment of silence to commemorate those who are serving in the military today and those who have served.
Sarah Ann Parler, president of the Garden Clubs of South Carolina Inc., mentioned that there are 110 dedicated markers in South Carolina and Elloree’s will be the 111th.
“We graciously accept this marker and thank you for displaying it at Joe Miller Park,” she said. “God bless America.”
After the unveiling and dedication of the marker, a wreath was laid by American Legion Post No.127. During the ceremony, Beverly Walling sang “America the Beautiful” and “America.” The program ended with taps performed on the trumpet by Foster Boone.
