Calhoun soccer

stays perfect

ST. MATTHEWS -- Calhoun Academy picked up another soccer win Monday, defeating Covenant Christian Academy, 8-1.

Scoring goals for the Cavaliers (4-0, 3-0) were Stuart Brunt, three goals, Patrick Taylor, two goals, Matt Jones, Matthew Coonrod and John Brunt, one goal each. John Brunt also had an assist.

Keepers John Brunt had five saves and Zack Spiegner had six.

Calhoun plays at Thomas Sumter Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Edisto softball

shuts out Branchville

BRANCHVILLE -- The Edisto varsity softball team shut out Branchville Monday, 15-0.

Winning pitcher Whitney Westbury (5-1) pitched a no-hitter and had 12 strikeouts. Caroline McCormick was the losing pitcher.

Leading Edisto (5-1, 1-1) at the plate were Amber Crosby, 2-4 with a home run, Hailey Carson, 2-4, Shasey Frye, 2-4, and Ashley Strock, 1-1.

Edisto plays at Wade Hampton Wednesday in a region game.

OPS tennis

wins match

COLUMBIA -- The Orangeburg Prep tennis team defeated Ben Lippen on the road Monday picking up its first win of the season. The Indians swept all nine matches in the win.

Singles winners include Stuart Dudley (6-1, 6-1); Lyle Molineux (6-2, 6-2); Will Womack (6-1, 6-0); Ryan Jimenez (6-0, 6-4); Victor Liao (6-3, 6-4); Hunter Lake (6-0, 6-1). Doubles winners include Dudley/Womack (8-0); Molineux/Jimenez (8-4); Liao/Lake (8-1).

Orangeburg Prep is back in action Wednesday at home against Heathwood Hall.

Holly Hill beats

Patrick Henry

ESTILL -- The Holly Hill Academy Lady Raiders outlasted Patrick Henry 26-15 Monday in Estill. Winning pitcher for the Lady Raiders was Sara Shuler who added two hits. Other hitters include Marissa Becker, three hits, home run; Emily Watkins, two hits, home run; Katlin Rush, one hit.

Holly Hill is back in action Thursday at Calhoun Academy.

JDA baseball

beats Bowman

BLACKVILLE -- The Jefferson Davis Academy baseball team picked up its first win of the year 7-5 at home against Bowman Academy. Winning pitcher for the Raiders was Korey Adams who also added a hit. Other hitters for JDA were Andrew Hallman, one hit; Sam West, one hit, three RBI; Jessie Thorton, one hit, one RBI; Edward Givens, one hit.

Losing pitcher for Bowman was Tripp Looper.

JDA will be back in action Monday at Clarendon Hall.

Edisto falls

to Hanahan

CORDOVA -- Edisto falls to 5-7 on the season with a 5-3 loss to Hanahan Monday in Cordova. Losing pitcher for the Cougars was Dillon Thomas. Thomas added three hits in the game, other hitters were Seth Cooper, three hits; Brad McDaniel, two hits; Matt Livingston, two hits.

Edisto faces Jasper County tonight on the road.

Hawks blank

Wagener-Salley

WAGENER -- The Blackville-Hilda Hawk soccer team shutout Wagener-Salley 4-0 to improve to 4-2 on the season. Blackville was led by Chris Bessinger, two goals; Quinton Johnson, one goal, one assist; Darrell White, one goal, two assists; Kyle Shore, one assist. Thomas Daniels stopped all five shots he faced.

The Hawks face North at home today.

OCA swept

Abundant Life defeated Orangeburg Christian Academy 14-2 in a varsity softball game played Monday.

Melanie Metts had a triple for OCA who next play Thursday against Edisto. Abundant Life also won the baseball game 18-5. OCA plays host to Victory Christian School on Friday.

OPS B-team

girls fall to LMA

MANNING -- The Orangeburg Prep School B-team fell to Laurence Manning Academy Monday, 3-1.

The winning pitcher was LMA's Grace Beatson while Mary Michael Wyndham led them at the plate, going 1-2.

Leading the B-team Lady Indians (0-3) in the loss were Julia Bonnett, 1-2, Brandi Miller, 1-3, and Casey McCurry had an RBI . Bonnett took the loss for OPS.

The B-team return to action Wednesday, March 28, in a 4 p.m. rematch against LMA at home.

Bessent, Pinewood Prep get win

Holly Hill native and Pinewood Prep senior Trey Bessent helps his tennis team to a win over Williamsburg Academy Monday, defeating his opponent 6-0, 7-5.

Pinewood Prep is 10-0 on the season, 3-0 in conference play. Bessent will be back in action today when Pinewood faces Bishop England.

Hicks' no-hitter lifts

Lady Indians to

tournament victory

SPARTANBURG -- The Newberry College softball team were declared champions of the 2007 South Carolina Fastpitch Classic on Sunday.

The Lady Indians won a three-way tie with Columbus State and USC-Upstate by virtue of allowing the least runs. They defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, Armstrong Atlantic State, Salem International, and Bluefield State. 

In the 8-0 win over Salem International, freshman Kristen Hicks of Bamberg-Ehrhardt struck out 10 batters in pitching her first career no-hitter. It was also the team's first no-hitter since Kayce McLeod's 1-0 win over Augusta State on March 15, 2004.

The Lady Indians batted .340 as a team in four games and netted eight extra base hits, scoring nearly half of their runs with two outs. The team gave up four runs in four games, only three of which were earned runs. Newberry is now 20-13-1 on the season, and has won seven of its last eight games.

"We are extremely proud of how everything came together this weekend," Lady Indians' head coach Joe Elston said. "We pitched well, we hit well and the defense played well. We're looking at this as a second start to our season, and we're very excited to start it on a positive note. The team is looking forward to a lot of good things as we enter conference play."

The Lady Indians host Lander University in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. today before traveling to USC Aiken for a Thursday twinbill. Newberry begins its South Atlantic Conference schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Carson-Newman College.

Edisto JV

sweeps Swansea

CORDOVA -- Edisto's JV baseball team swept a doubleheader from Swansea Saturday in Cordova winning game one 3-2, and game two 9-8. Winning pitcher for the Cougars in game one was Marcellus Kennerly while Tyler Davis picked up the win in game two.

Leading hitter for game one were Tommy Joyner, two hits; Brenden Darby, one hit; Ryan Merritt, two hits. Leading hitters for game two were Davis, two hits; Merritt, two hits; Zac Blackburn, two hits.

Edisto is back in action Wednesday at home against Wade Hampton.
