MY TAKE ON ... 18 things to do during spring break

People can make such a fuss about where they are going on vacation for spring break. Some take big family vacations, and some go to the beach with a group of friends. Not everyone has plans, though.

Who says that you have to go anywhere? If you are just staying home during your free week, there’s plenty to do. Sometimes the expense-free spring break is the best type.

Here are 10 ideas for things to do during your time away from the books.

1. Volunteer. Volunteering makes you feel good about yourself and helps you appreciate what you have. Giving back to others can be the biggest reward, and spring break is a wonderful time to do it. Some volunteer programs in the community are Habitat for Humanity, the YMCA, Calhoun Cares, United Way or church programs.

2. Learn to cook. Impress your family with a home-cooked meal after work. Use your mom’s cookbooks to find new ideas that the family would enjoy, or search the Internet for a new delicacy.

3. Learn to scrapbook. Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to organize photos, newspaper clippings, letters and anything personal. Use different stickers and colors to coordinate with the particular subject, such as flower stickers and pastel pages for this spring’s photos. You will love your creation when you finish!

4. Exercise. Walk or jog outside and enjoy the beginning of the warm weather, or do crunches and sit-ups to work on your bathing suit body for the upcoming season.

5. Learn to dance. Find a friend who excels in dancing and ask him or her to teach you a few moves. If you don’t know anyone like this, just find an energizing song and make up some moves yourself.

6. Take your grandparents out for lunch or coffee. Ask them questions that you have never asked them before, such as how your grandpa proposed to your grandma or what life was like when they were your age. Instead of them spoiling you, you spoil them for an afternoon.

7. Organize your room. Move the bed by the window or scoot your dresser in the closet. Buy new artwork for your walls or ask your parents if you can give the room a new paint job.

8. Go fishing. Spend some time outdoors and soak up some rays while fishing in a pond, river or lake. You don’t even have to keep the fish you catch; just enjoy being outside.

9. Create a garden. Find some seeds of your favorite flower and designate a spot in your yard for your own personal garden. Begin your garden during spring break and water and nurture it while watching your favorite flowers grow.

10. Have a movie marathon. Watch your favorite movies all day long or find a season of your favorite reality show on DVD. Pop some popcorn, pour a Coke, and relax by watching your all-time favorite movies.
