BAMBERG – The Bamberg-Ehrhardt Red Raiders clinched a region championship with a 12-2 win over Williston-Elko Friday.
Matt Chassereau picked up the win as the Red Raiders improved to 8-0 in the region. Murray Smith took the loss for Williston-Elko.
For Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Corey Brooks and Nick Tritapoe were each 2-3, and Brandon Bamberg was 2-4 with four RBIs. Dexter Roberts, Dalton Wilson, Jesse Reed and Cody Pruitt each picked up a hit for Williston-Elko.
B-E plays in the Hawaiian Tropic tournament next week.
BRANCHVILLE – Branchville improved to 10-1 on the season after defeating Wagener-Salley, 4-1
Willie Brown, Patrick McDonald, Lawrence Kelly and Eric Byrd all scored for the Yellow Jackets, who resume Region 6-A play against Academic Magnet.
CORDOVA – Edisto defeated Sliver Bluff in softball Friday, 10-4.
Winning pitcher Whitney Westbury (10-1) had eight strikeouts. Leading hitters were Hailey Carson, 3-4; Amber Crosby, 3-4; Shassey Frye, 4-3; and Taylor Holbert, 2-4.
Losing pitcher was Alicia Jackson.
Edisto plays in the Summerville Azalea Tournament next week.
EDGEFIELD – David Hammett’s goal in the final minute lifted Bamberg-Ehrhardt to a 3-2 victory over Strom Thurmond on Thursday.
Hammett scored two goals on the evening for the Red Raiders, who also got a goal from Anthony Verner. Rondu Forbes, Aaron Mess and Travis Toomer each assisted on goals for B-E.
Dylan Searson had 15 saves in goal for the Red Raiders (7-3-1), who next play April 11 against Swansea at home.
WALTERBORO – Dorchester Academy defeated Colleton Prep in baseball action Friday, 3-0.
McKinley Stephens (3-0) had 12 strikeouts as winning pitcher. Walt Quattlebaum picked up the save.
The leading Dorchester hitter was Jeffrey Collins, 1-4 with a home run and two RBIs. DA returns to action April 10 against Laurence Manning Academy.
AIKEN – The Edisto Cougars cruised to an 11-2 win over Silver Bluff Friday.
Winning pitcher was Seth Cooper, 2-1. Leading Edisto (8-9, 5-4) at the plate were Cooper, 2-4 with a triple; Brad McDaniel, 2-5; Josh Strock, 2-3; Drew Sanders, 2-4; and Myles Brown, 3-4.
Edisto plays again Monday against James Island High School in the Hanahan Invitational Tournament at 7:30 p.m.
The South Carolina State men’s golf team will host the two-day Bulldog Golf Classic Sunday and Monday at the Country Club of Orangeburg. The event, which is in its fifth year, is being conducted at the Par 72, 6,702-yard course for the first time after being held at the Hillcrest Golf Course the past four years. The competition gets underway at 8 a.m.daily with 18 holes to be played each day.
Eight teams, including the host Bulldogs, will be participating in the tournament, which will have a practice round on Saturday.
S.C. State was runner-up last season.
The South Carolina State University women’s softball team will travel to North Carolina this weekend.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-27) will look to get in the win column as they take on Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State on Saturday and the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Sunday.
This will be the first meeting of the season between S.C. State and Winston-Salem State and the second of the season between the Lady Bulldogs and N.C. A&T.
The first pitch against the Lady Rams is set for 1 p.m. while the first pitch against the Lady Aggies is set for 2 p.m.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Claflin University split a road doubleheader with Shaw University Friday.
The Panthers won the first game 7-2 behind pitcher Jeffrey Pierze, while dropping the second contest 8-3.
Claflin returns to action Monday at Mirmow Field against Edward Waters College.
