Seven young women vied for the Miss Black Orangeburg USA 2007 title at the W.V. Middleton Auditorium at Claflin University Sunday night, and it was Edrian Wright of Orangeburg who captured the crown. Her platform was breast cancer awareness.

The theme of the event was “Ain’t I a Woman.” The pageant was a celebration of life, legacy and love, not only in the local community, but throughout the world. The pageant was also a tribute to Sojourner Truth, former slave, abolitionist, preacher and women’s rights advocate.

The Miss Black Teen Orangeburg USA 2007 also took place during the program. Kimberly Purdy, a 15-year-old student at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, was the winner. Purdy recently made the O-W cheerleading team and also likes to dance.

After individual interviews held earlier in the day, contestants for Miss Black Orangeburg competed in the talent, evening wear, fitness wear and a question-and-answer session for the coveted crown and the chance to compete for Miss Black South Carolina USA in August.

In addition to becoming Miss Black Orangeburg for 2007, Edrian Wright was the biggest winner of the evening. She won the talent competition for doing a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She also received first place in the Fitness, Interview and People’s Choice categories.

Wright is a biological science major at Clemson University who wants to become a trauma surgeon. Her other interests include singing, dancing and meeting new people.

Latasha Esaw, a 23-year-old mass communication and broadcast journalism major at Claflin University whose platform for the contest was abstinence, performed a lyrical dance to the song “Till You Believe.” She has plans to become a TV news anchor. Esaw was the first runner-up and tied with Wright for first place in the evening gown competition.

Several South Carolina State University students were among the contestants. Erica Flint, a 22-year-old senior who is majoring in economics, wants to become a successful businesswoman. For the talent portion of the program, she recited the poem “Lord, Why Did You Make Me Black?” Her platform was diabetes awareness; she was second runner-up and community service winner.

Flint also received the Business Ladies at Work award for selling the most advertisements for the program.

Regina Knight, a graduate student in speech and language pathology at S.C. State whose platform was mental illness awareness, recited a poem titled “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Knight won the Miss Photogenic award.

Another contestant used a poem for her talent presentation. Annie Williams, 23, performed a recitation of “Sister, My Sister.” She graduated from SCSU with a B.S. degree in mathematics and wants to become a teacher.

S.C. State graduate Tiffany Gantt, who received a B.S. degree in criminal justice, plans to work in a juvenile diversion program, which was also her platform. Gantt, who is in the U.S. Air Force, tied with another contestant, Sarah Stroman, for Miss Congeniality. Stroman is currently enrolled in the nursing degree program at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College and aspires to become a successful nurse. In addition to tying for Miss Congeniality, she promoted overcoming low self-esteem in overweight women for her contest platform.

During the program, two Visionary Awards for African American women were presented by Desiree Lewis, 2006 Miss Black Orangeburg who went on to win Miss Black South Carolina last summer. The first award went to Veronica Primus-Thomas, a special needs teacher who originated the STAAR, or Serious Teens and Adults Acting Responsibly program. The second recipient was 96-year-old Geraldyne Zimmerman. Lewis described Zimmerman as “an outstanding educator who dedicated her life to inspiring hundreds of young men and women to study mathematics.” Zimmerman also worked with the Girl Scouts in many capacities for more than 50 years.

As Miss Black South Carolina, Desiree Lewis will travel to Gambia next month for the coveted Miss Black USA title. She said she goes to Washington, D.C., on May 20 for interviews and then on to Gambia on May 23. Lewis is a first-grade teacher at Mellichamp Elementary School in Orangeburg.

Miss Black Orangeburg is a working crown. In addition to competing for the Miss Black South Carolina title in August, her job responsibilities include serving as a program ambassador and public relations representative, articulating her platform position and personality in a manner of public interest and representing commercial sponsors. She is also expected to encourage other young women to hone their own talents.

Judges in the contest were Kizzy Rivers, a program coordinator at Claflin University; Karen Jenkins, an accounting representative at McKesson in Charleston and Carol Gibbs, a graduate student at Springfield College in North Charleston.

Entertainment during the program was modern dance by Marissa Southerland.

" This is to Confused citizen....I agree with you 100%. I am also ashamed at what my ancestors did during the times of the Civil War. But I try to learn the right and wrong of it myself and then pass the positives on to my child. That color does not matter and that everyone should be treated equal. No one should ever be a slave. Maybe this small contribution will help shape their future for the better. It does start in the home with the parents but unless the parents feel this way too then the wrong message is taught and passed down to future generations. My son is 12 years old and he sees it. He says color shouldn't matter. The importance is inside of a person, their hearts. One of his heroes is Martin Luther King, Jr. He actually had to do a class report on a famous person 3 years ago and he chose Martin Luther King, Jr. and my son is white. So i was very proud that he chose him. That he saw the importance of what he stood for regardless of color. I am proud for these young African American ladies that participated in the padgent. They are a great example to all other young women of ALL colors!!! "

" I do not see many kids with this type of attitude towards each other. If a kid does have a racist attitude it is usually because thier parents or others teach it to them. What we need to do is teach our kids that everyone is the same no matter what color they are. Yes my ancisters did wrong by having slaves and yes that does make me assamed for what they did but all I can do is make the matter right now by treating others right and teaching my kids to do the same. I even had a grand father who was in the KKK and I love him to death but I never talked to him about the problem I had with his involement in the KKK because I don't ever believe I could condone thier actions. I do fell bad when I look at what my ancisters did but even today I see people and talk to people in Orangeburg that have just as much hatred in the now as thier ancisters did. Why is this? They were never taught right when it comes to equal treatment and society will never be right untill they face the facts and decide not ot pass this generational curse down to thier kids. " I really don't understand why when black people do things it is always looked at under a microscope. How long have their been pageants that are not named Miss White Whatever, yet has nothing but white contestants. It was contest for young black women to build up their community. I am sure when they named the pageant they were not saying let's keep out white people, instead concentrating on uplifting their students and their community. What is wrong with that! Like I said everything black people do is always such a big deal. Racism is still alive and black people having their own affairs is not racist. No more racist than having an Irish parade and ,if they had a pageant for Miss Irish Pageant what the heck is the problem. Get over it! "

What about wrote on May 7, 2007 8:29 AM:

" What gets me is every time a African American makes a bad grade at school it is because the teacher is white and they gave that black person the grade because they are black. Come on African Americans what a bout earning the grade instead of trying to find a excuse. If they are told black and white both how to dress in the work place for their own safety the first thing out of the blacks mouth is man your are telling me how to dress because I am black (this person forgets the white guy was told the same thing). The african American will quit a good paying job and they will tell you this because they can make more money from welfare having another baby. What about having a baby because you love and want them not because you want to amke money off of them. It is always the african American saying the white man is holding them down. You don't hear the revearse because the white man does not throw it in your face. My son was told in school by a teacher that he was stupid and could not learn at a early age. So he thought this teacher was right and believed it all through school and never did well. (maybe this was a case of the african American holding the white man down)You try to explain away everything you do instead of admitting the truth. Don't use the white man for a excuse because you can not do well when the fact is you are not trying you the cracker to just give it to you without having to work for it. And there are some whites that have learn this as well if they do not work it will be given to them. I am sure black or white there are some that will agree with me on this one. You keep your own self down if you do not try. I have always been able to hold a job because when I get there I take pride in my work and do my best. I don't go there stand around and make the comment I am just here waiting for Friday to collect my check. And I am not saying all African Americans do this just some because I have worked with some really good workers and that is just what they are really good. I live next door to African Americans you could not ask for better neighbors, but on the other hand some live around the corner that don't mind breaking into my house and robbing me but then again there are just as many whites that will do the same. So both colors have their good and bad. Stop blaming someone else for your bad. "

" First of all I would like to applaud the efforts of the pagent and congratulate the winner. Now let's talk the real talk. Are you serious citizens of Orangeburg? Let's get it straight. I was born and raised in Orangeburg. I love my city and state. Here I am serving my country. Fighting the "WAR" on terrorism with variety of race/ethnicity. While back at home my people (all races) are still entertaining racism? I read a few of these postings and I just couldn't take it anymore. We have on here all kinds of opinions from various people with different backgrounds, but let me see if I can contribute something to put things back their proper perspectives. Restore a little light here. Our country is very diverse. We're probably the most diverse country of them all. I'm not here to do any race bashing by all means. Here is my point. All my life I grew up saying that I was AA because that was WHAT I WAS TAUGHT. In the battle field, to foreign countries guess what? WE ARE ALL AMERICANS! America has spent so much time trying to classify people and this and that. The real factor here is totally being over looked. If you were born in the U.S. you're American. Have you ever heard of Black Chinese? White German? We're the only country thyat does that. Look Orangeburg, a whole lot of folks died in 9-11 of all races. When I put my uniform on I feel proud to be and American! I know my history, but I also dictate my future an so do you all. There is not a single sole person alive can say that they were born a racist. All that stuff is taught. We as American people can ither continue to hate each other. Which is totally stupid, but know we got a whole lot of folks that hate "US" just because we are the U.S.! C'mon Orangeburg we're better than that. I love you all. "

" Ajamu's comment that no one cares about European slaves speaks volumes. It is clear that unless the discussion is centered around the mistreatment of blacks, then it is unworthy. What a obvious double standard. So I suppose you imply that whites created jails to further keep the black man down, and drugs, etc... What a paranoid dillusional life you must lead. Your attempt at spinning the argument is laughable. You justify black's quest for separate functions by saying whites dont want it to happen. What a load of crap. Honestly, I dont think white people give a dam. They just are tired of being told they are the root cause of all the evil in the black world. Its a dead horse, quit beating it. "

" I agree 100% with L.Govan. I am graduate of SCSU and a native of Norway. We as black people do have double standards. Having a "Miss Black Orangeburg" has nothing to do with celebrating my heritage. If that was the case then call it "Miss Heritage". If it was a "Miss White Orangeburg", most of us would be on here protesting. Proclaiming that "Miss Black Orangeburg" is no different than white southerners stating that the Confederate Flag is about heritage. We as black people need to stop with the double standards, move on, and quit thinking that someone always owe us something. "

Ajamu wrote on May 3, 2007 5:19 PM:

" One thing that any posters of Caucasian descent must appreciate about the African experience in America is that the legacy of the past continues to plague the communities where there arw high concentrations of Africans. Until there is a balance of understanding American and African history, politics and culture there will continue to be those Africans that feel they are owed some thing and Caucasians who feel that the past is something to be forgotten without resolution, restitution or reparations. One cannot ask over 30 million people to be aware of Japanese reparations, Jewish reparations, a Jewish state and even a trillion dollar commitment to a so called war in Iraq and expect that the question "Where's ours?" not to be asked, no demanded. Every other ethnic group can demonstrate ethnic pride in some form or fashion but as soon as Africans demonstrate any inkling of racial solidarity and ancestral pride the reverse racist accusations come flying. When ever Caucasians criticize Africans doing something to honor their own they reveal themselves as having oppressive mentalities. As long as Africans pay their taxes and die in the wars then we are acceptable. Whenever money gets spent on anything that promotes the upliftment of Africans there is such a negative outcry that Africans are racist. Why don't ya'll have the Asians stop being so Asian, or the Indians from India stop being so Indian. What makes ya'll think Africans have to be the negroes you want us to be? Africans are the original people of the planet earth and we will still be Africans 388 years from now. Since 1619 Caucasians have tried to dictate to Africans what to think and what to do and for 388 years Africans have resisted. How much would it benefit Orangeburg and the U.S.A. if Africans were allowed to know and repect each other the way the Asians and people of the East do, that live in the U.S.A.. Like it or not the Million Man March demonstrated that Africans are still highly civilized and accepting of all races. Now 12 years later we still are witnessing assaults on the collective character of Africans by those who would see us continue to struggle for self actualization. Stop trying to hold back " An Idea Whose Time Has Come." Like the newcomer said, " There are a lot of wonderful people in Orangeburg of ALL races. " LET ALL OF THE FLOWERS BLOOM." Confisus sum no one cares about how Europeans used to enslave other Europeans or that Native Americans and Africans owned slaves in the antebellum south. That number was so insignificant compared to the millions that were enslaved. Precolonial Africa did not have a department of corrections or jails as we know them today. That is a European concept of incarceration. War captives and criminals were not slaughtered wholesale, they were indentured and forced to make restitution to the victims of crime through work. African nations were exploited by slavers from, first the so called Middle East for a 1000 years and then by the Europeans. The nations of West Africa were in disarray as a result and yes greedy despots sold captive enemies and criminals to Europeans once the European system of infecting a nation with drugs (RUM), addiction, greed, individualism and capitalism along with a few ladies of the evening was fully implemented. Throw in the use of Manifest Destiny, false Christianity being imposed on an ancient people for a few decades and yes you will produce black slave dealers who are the spitting image of today's drug dealers. STOP BLAMING THE VICTIMS and come clean with the Creator before your time is up!!! "

Will Things Ever Change? wrote on May 3, 2007 10:54 AM:

" I have to agree with Eliza and Mr. Govan. I believe African Americans continue to segregate themselves, for they continue to feel they need to be compensated for what happened in the past, for what them, themselves, did not actually go through. When will they finally feel they have been compensated enough? It seems odd to me that they continue to want segregated events, scholarships, groups, etc., when it was African Americans who fought so hard for it to be abolished. The “race” card needs to quit being played from both sides! It’s not about what happened in the past or who did what to whom, but it’s about what we want our future generations to accomplish and achieve. And I am sure noone wants it to always be a race issue. As far as the Confederate Flag goes, those who are opposed to it apparently really don’t know what it stands for or the history behind it, for both Whites and African Americans fought. It’s nothing derogatory meant towards African Americans. It’s also message boards like this that tends to fuel the fire for both races....it just goes to show that racism will always be an issue...no matter how hard any one person can strive for it not to be. " I am a recent transplant here in Orangeburg. I have lived many places, all in the south. I was brought up by my parents to love and trust everyone until they give you a reason not to. I have been here several months and have met no one whom I regret meeting. I have worked with many talented black and white folks and grew to enjoy new relationships. I was not familiar with the "Orangeburg Massacre" until coming here. I feel it is another example among many of our failure as a society not to treat everyone as our creator intended. It disturbs me to read the sometimes silly rantings posted here. I don't feel this is a true representation of Orangeburg. We all tend to segregate ourselves to some extent. In some cases, it is OK. We all like to be with our own kind. The immediate way we can do that on one level is the color of our skin. We do it at public event, churches and otherwise. As long as it does not breed hate, it is OK. We can segrate ourselves without hate or racism. I feel we all let history make our opinions and judgements at times irrational. These postings, to an outsider, appear very irrational at times. I learned early in life not to say or write anything that no obvious good would come of. If we all honored that, many of these postings would not exist or would be much abbreviated. I have driven around Orangeburg, just to learn my way around. We sure have a lot of churches in Orangeburg is one thing I have noticed. Maybe our churches will see an opportunity to bridge the gap. I know Orangeburg has a lot of wonderful people of many races. I have met them personally. If most of us make an effort to bridge the gap and cease to let history cloud our judgement, we can make progress in Orangeburg. If we continue to quarrel among races because of our unfortunate past, we will never cause progress. None of us can change the past, but we do have much control over the present and the future. I regret there is so much tension. It is refreshing to ocassionally see positive posting. I'm only one person, but am committed not to let history cloud my judgement. In any situation, there is good and bad. If we choose to concentrate on the bad, we will be a part of it and add to it. Also, if we concentrate on the good, we will be a part of it and add to it. I choose the good. Have a great day. I love you all. "

" It truly is discouraging to see the slanted view of history that Obg educator is teaching today's youth. This person's obvious bias, does less to promote unity, than it does to extend division. My fear is that this rewritten history will ultimately be accepted as truth. This individual, coupled with the liberal-controlled media, focuses exclusively on the enslavement of Blacks. The impression is given that only Whites bear responsibility for enslaving Blacks and that only Blacks were slaves. In fact, Blacks in Africa engaged in extensive enslavement of their own kind. Slavery was endemic in Africa, with entire tribes being enslaved through conquest on a regular basis. When Arabic, Jewish and White slave traders arrived on the coast of sub-Saharan Africa, they seldom if ever had to travel inland and fight or pursue their "targets". They were met on the coast by Africans more than willing to sell slaves to them by the thousands. And in America, records show that Black slaves were owned, not just by a few wealthy Whites, but by free Blacks and by Cherokee Indians. In some cases, these Blacks and Indians even owned White slaves. White slaves were actually owned by Blacks and Indians in the South to such an extent that the Virginia Assembly passed the following law in 1670: "It is enacted that no negro or Indian though baptized and enjoying their own freedom shall be capable of any such purchase of Christians." The records of the time reveal that free Blacks often owned Black slaves themselves. In 1717, it was proposed that a qualification for election to the South Carolina Assembly was to be "the ownership of one White man." From 1609 until the early 1800s, between one half and two thirds of all the White colonists who came to the New World came as slaves. White slaves cleared the forests, drained the swamps, built the roads, sweated in the fields, and died like flies in hellish factories. Owned like property, they had no rights nor recourse to the law. Fugitive slave laws applied to them just as to Blacks if they should flee their masters. Black slaves were expensive, and though at times cruelly used, were seen as disposable based on the investment made, unlike the "cheap" white labor that was virtually disposable. "

Stop teaching them hate and racism!" But American has been mislead. 1. The overwhelming number of slaves were captured not by persons in their homeland, not by others. Slaver has existed on evey continent, but only the Europeans turned it into an industry to support thier laziness to build this country. Check the REAL reason for the Confederacy, which is why many still have heart-felt emotions concerning the flag. 2. As an Educator, I can attest that Black History IS NOT taught year-round in our schools. Let's not forget that history is the story of the victor or the one in control of the presses. Thus, His Story. 3. Whites DID NOT BUILD THIS COUNTRY. It was built with the dead bodies, blood, seat & tears of Proud Africans while whites masters stood by. Let's not mention the fact that native Americans were already here & their lives were forfeit in the process. This is the only country "discovered" by someone; wo by the way didn't even get here, but who's life was spared from mutany by his endentured African servant, NINA. Sound familiar? All of my sisters and brothers, no matter what race, will meet Him one day and he will not judge you based on your heritage. After all, he blessed you with it to begin with. There should not be a pageant or anything else that excludes any of us, Miss Black Orangeburg or Queen of Roses. We should join together as people of God to form one city, one state, one nation. I have only one last request to all of Orangeburg. Love each other the way God loves each of you! "

Yes when I was growing up in Orangeburg I was tought hatred towards people because of thier skin, but I refuse to allow this hatred to be passed on to my son who is 16 months old. I have made this point clear to all of mine and my wife's family and hopefully we can raise a child who knows "A man should not be judge by the color of his skin but by the content of his character" (MLK). " Everyone needs to let it go. So Orangeburg held a Miss Black Orangeburg pageant. Instead of putting down people doing something positive in the community, we should be applauding them for their efforts. These are intelligent young women trying to make a difference. Does it matter what race they are or what the name of the pageant was? Maybe T and D needs to take the comment page away because some people don't know what to say on it. For the person who said she is married to a black man; Just because you're married to a black man doesn't mean you aren't prejudiced towards his people in some kind of way. For the on that started the issue at hand; you also need to examine yourself and get over the prejudice you have towards people. Notice I said people and not black people. Which means you have some type of hatred on your heart because you wouldn't be hating on this Miss Black Orangeburg pageant. Everyone, including myself needs to take a look in the mirror & and ask themselves what change do I need to make for this to be a better place, not why is there a Miss Black Orangeburg, or why wasn't there a Miss White Orangeburg. People can stereotype blacks and say they need to think for themselves, but every race has people making some of the same stupid mistakes. No one can stereotype or judge anyone for that matter. God is the only one who can judge us. He made us in his image and we need to act more christ like. I pray that we all can come together and really examine what is going in the world and try to make a difference. It should not matter whether you are red, black, white, or yellow. God loves us all, and we need to learn to get along no matter what goes on in the community especially if it was not intentionally done to offend you. "

" I have sat here and read every comment posted. And I got sick to my stomach. The fact is there will always be two sides to every coin... White/Black, Male/Female, Left/Right, North/South, Hot/Cold, Day/Night, to name a few. There will always be diversity, you can't hide from it. The measure of a man or woman is not as cut and dry as white or black. Everyone has very complex and different emotions. The secret to overcoming diversity is looking past the absolutes. Absolutes being the color, gender or any other aspect that you have no control over and cannot change. I am Male, and have been married for 10 years to my wonderful wife. She is very different than me in every way. But we don't look at the differences. We have learned to look past our differences and focus on the needs and respect the person inside. Every living being on the planet has a God given right to love and be loved. We as a society should come together and stop the finger pointing and mud slinging, and learn to see past the color, and lift up a brother in need. I believe world has forgotten how fragile life is. If you were blessed enough to wake up this morning and draw air into you lungs, you should thank God for the privilege to live another day, and live today as if it where you’re last. None of us are promised tomorrow. I want everybody who reads this to ask yourself one question…”If you were to die today, how would you be remembered?” Your future will be our children’s past. We have an opportunity to set in motion, events that will out live anyone of us. And I for one do not want our children to have the same past as ours. We can not change the past, but we can learn from it. I’m not talking about the Wars, flags, and slavery. I’m talking about the fact that we as humans, after all the opportunities we had to make a difference for the greater good, we have not been able to see past our own selfishness. All I hear these days is, I want, I deserve, I need. This is the same selfishness that has plunged countries into war, destroyed families, starved and the weak. Let’s all come together as one, with one voice and use this opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. "

Also, make sure to lock your doors at night, you know white kids kill their parents. Make sure to check on your children, they also commit suicide. Oh, yeah. I know. White kids never get suspended. They just use meth in private, you know the new drug of choice. Be careful of those serial killers and child molesters as well. I'm sure they live all around you in your low class, low crime neighborhood. Lastly, black kids steal? Look at who is in the news for stealing billions of yes, YOUR money. I was actually hoping that in this anonamous forum, that blacks and whites might actually be able to get an honest view of how the "other-side" sees things like this. If we honestly look at our town, we all know that it's still basically segregated. The only thing that has changed is that instead of 2 seperate communities, we now have 3. There are basically White neighborhoods, Black neighborhoods, and much smaller groups in the "gray" area where "mixed" couples are usually found. Obviously, none of these are 100% of any one race, but they may as well be. I've just recently returned "home" after many years of living in Charleston. I grew up here, listening to my Mom tell me about the first black kids to come to her school (Edisto Middle...she was in the 7th grade at the time, and they rode her bus!). I had almost forgotten how this town is set up. So, I guess the Blacks will continue with Ms Black Orangeburg, NAACP, The Negro College Fund, and the other private groups that they deserve...after all their Great-Grandparents were slaves. I'll keep sending my kids to public school (where they will of course be placed in mostly white classes (so that those disruptive black kids don't screw-up their education), living in my low-crime white neighborhood, listening to my kids talk about the black kids who have been suspended/expelled for acting out in class (where mine will get detention at worst), and making sure that they are raised knowing that blacks steal because they think that we owe them something. If our races are both willing to continue blaming the other for everything wrong in this town (instead of trying to work together); who knows, we may be able to keep things the way they are for another 100 years! I give...you win, things seem to be working out fine for all of us. I'll hoist my Naval Jack this weekend, you know to show how proud I am of my Southern White Heritage. "

Even Europeans show preferences and prejudices about blonde vs. brunette vs. redheads. Italians are discriminated against to this day. Since you admitted you are part Native American then you are not a W.A.S.P. and are looked down upon in certain circles. However you probably still look white and if you had any African blood it would probably show, therefore you still benefit from white priviledge. It's a fact of life in this race based society. " Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it." Why don't you tell the Jewish people to forget about the past? Why won't the Hawaiians and Native Americans forget about the past. Do you really believe that since Africans have progressed like no other enslaved group in history, it justifies excusing wrongs against the human race done in the past. What was done is inexcusable. It may be forgiven, as has been done, but never forgotten. As for Mr.I,Govan; if you are of African descent then you are a sorry excuse of a man for denying your ancestor's sacrifice for you to be here. Your African ancestors came through the bowels of hell in the belly of a slave ship and worked until dying with the dream that some day their off spring would be free to READ, WRITE, VOTE,GET MARRIED and OWN PROPERTY. You are a disgrace to your family for your declaration of being an American and not African. The African gene pool is the original gene pool of the human race and is still the dominant gene pool on the planet. It's why you still appear of African descent after all of the race mixing tha that has gone on in the south since the beginnings of slavery by the slave masters. If you don't look like you are of African descent then don't claim us and just TRY passing for white, we don't need you. Why not try sending a DNA sample to ANCESTRY.COM and find out where your ancestors come from in Africa. Truthfully i've never been to one so that's probably why. Anyway. I'm white I have black friends my husband is Cuban I dated a black boy in school and everybody and their mama tried to keep us apart. I get hassled at work because I'm trying to learn how to speak Spanish because my in-laws speak it and my husband's grandmother can't speak English, well she know's my name, but that's beside the point. They tell me that I should just find a man that speaks English or my husbands family should learn how to speak english. Why? Somethings just happen because they happen. Why does a race card have to be played for everything? You see, the only key to all this is to look beyond race and see the human. My roomate which ;like it matters; was a black guy. He is one of my best friends and I would do anything for him in the world, Actually, he just officiated my wedding. I would do anytrhing in the world for him and likewise for him. When I was young, I wasnt taught hate until I got to high school with my peers. Why is it that you could put a room full of kids together white, black, green, yellow and blue together and they can play together and hang together, but you get the same group of people as adults, and they are fighting each other because of color? You are not born racist or born to hate, it is a learned behavior and it comes from the parents or guardians. Why do it? Does it really matter what the color of skin is in the end on judgement day? Do the contestants have to show a pedigree? We are ALL Americans first, Southerners second, and then a mix of where our ancestors came from and who they slept with...which isn't always what is recorded on the birth records. We all need to agree (yeah right), if we want a segregated community or an integrated community. I just don't get the concept of being integrated...except when Blacks want a "private club". The "race riots" were held by a group of people that wanted to be integrated into the "mainstream". People fought and died for us to be one community (which of course everyone deserves). These events and headlines do nothing to support that goal, all they do is make sure that the divider remains between the groups. Neither section of people can decide when the other can be included or excluded (at their sole discretion), if we want to achieve a race-blind community. If you truly believe it's okay for blacks to mentor black youths (excluding all other races), then why shouldn't whites, Asian, and Spanish people have the same option? If I were to start an after school center to mentor, guide, inspire, and tutor white children only...is that okay? I don't think that it is, but according to some of the thoughts that have been expressed here...I guess it would be. So, do we continue the fight for equality; or do we accept that we are two seperate groups? It really doesn't matter to me, I just want the rules to the game that we're playing. "

So, you are no more special than anyone else when it comes to heritage. I have many different mixtures running through my viens as do most people. The program provides educational programs, positive mentoring and scholarships for young women to pursue their personal or professional goals. It surmounts the stereotypical view of pageants in America and instills the importance of high self-esteem, discipline, and perseverance in the delegates. The program also develops a platform for young women to speak out on issues of concern to them, their communities, state, and nation. There are many African american young women who are in this county who will benefit from this program. Please take time to meet these young ladies before you judge. They are the leaders, mothers, teachers, lawyers, and etc. of tomorrow. I think that the people who have negative views of this organization are afraid of the power that African American women have. I was told if you can't beat them join them. Visit their website www.missblacksc.org. "

" What I meant by "not really racist", was the fact that I knew how my statement would be interpeted by most "PC" readers. As for my heritage, I'm a mix of Native American and German (along with God knows what else). I know more of the true history of the Confederate War than most, simply because I care enough about my Southern Heritage to read about it. The easiest fact to research (that is the surest way to see the mindset of the times) is...Robert E Lee didn't own any slaves, while Grant owned 3. Even during the war and until the Thirteenth Amendment was passed he held onto his slaves. He was eventually forced by law to free them.I'll not try to teach Southern History here, since there is really no point to it. As far as how many blacks come to my house in a month...I only have 1 black friend that comes to my house...how many whites come to yours? To clear up the question of my intellect, I'm one of 2 people in the Orangeburg area listed in MENSA. My ancestors were not openly accepted here either. You know what happened to my Native American side, but on my German side...we started out as indentured servants. I don't ask for special considerations because my ancestors were murdered, raped, and owned. If I used that as an excuse everytime something didn't go my way, eventually people would stop caring and resent the fact that I try to benefit from something that I never had to deal with. The more you say that you need something extra because of things that are several generations removed, the longer you will be seen as inferior. I'm sorry that you don't get it, but to be treated as equal...you have to act equal. "

There are many citizens of Orangeburg county who still do not realize how unique and special the town is. The good old boys and girls will never accept the reality of the richness of intellect and talent that resides in the community; primarily because of it's diversity. Include Denmark in that mix. Even Jackie Robinson came to Orangeburg and Larry Doby grew up near Orangeburg. Eliza and all of the haters need to celebrate the fact that there has finally been a Miss Black Orangeburg pageant and the winner didn't look white. It represents an evolution among the African residents of Orangeburg. This growth in the appreciation of the African aesthetic will promote more growth in business for the African community of Orangeburg, which will benefit Greater Orangeburg. It's only natural for any ethnic group to celebrate it's identity year round. Those that take issue with Africans doing something for themselves are exhibiting some sort of psychosis or phobia and should seek mental health counseling. A therapist could really help you before your world view begins to affect your health. "

Let's not sit here and act like we do not know the reasons why these types of organizations exist. It is because of YOUR devisiveness that is the reason for these organizations. If the majority pageants (ex. Miss America) were more inclusive, as is blindly obvious, then there would be no need for pageants such as these. A young African American beautiful contestant in the Miss America pageant 2006 was robbed. What more would they want than a 2nd year Phd. student from Emory at age 23. And yes, I am talking about a local native. Yet she was not even in the top 5. Yet a drunk bimbo can beat out someone like that. I am so sick of this "double standard" excuse you are trying to voice to justify your hatred. You are racist and it is what it is. If it wasn't for your past and present actions, minorities would not have to have "their own" organizations, colleges, etc. And yes, we cannot change the past, but it still exists and it will NOT be forgotten. And, it is not just the past; Hate crimes against minorities are still going on in huge numbers and noone is being penalized for it. When a police department can pump 50 bullets into an unarmed African American male based on what they "THOUGHT" he was, then it is still a RACIST society that we live in. When police officers pump 50 bullets into a white male and get acquitted for it then we can have dialogue. When armed officers can give a blow to the head of a white boy in a juvenile prison, and yes white kids are in juvenile, and put it on the fact that he had epilepsy when a video tape CLEARLy proves otherwise, then you can talk. When white males and females are stopped on I-95 because of the car they drive; then you talk to me about who is devisive. Your entire history and present is divisive. How dare you call African Americans divisive. Can you really say that without laughing. You are a joke. You constantly keep your heritage alive; everyday we are reminded of your heritage. Look up the website MAAFA.org then talk to me. This is YOUR heritage. Show pictures when such outright hatred has been cast upon your people; and you call us devisive. You are a joke. You call us devisive, show me where you have been so INCLUSIVE! African Americans, contrary to the media, we are doing great. Keep making your money, Saving your money, Investing your money, and educating your children regardless to what society says. We are the biggest threat to America. Keep doing what you are doing. The definition of racist is a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others. No where in this article did it state or imply any superiority of race. Comments like this such as yours confirms that there are a lot of ingnorant people in the world. As for the Confederate flag face it you lost!
