On a perfect, bright, sunny Saturday morning, the Calhoun County Purple Martin Festival kicked off with the largest parade ever.

Boasting of 65 units, the parade initiated what many considered to be the largest and best event in Purple Martin Festival history.

“This is the best event in years. We have more people and more activities. It's really, really good,” Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said.

The festival sponsor is the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, whose president, James Burn, said, “It’s going well! We have made changes which have provided more benefits.”

He added that he had met people who had driven four hours to attend the festival.

“This is what the chamber gives back to the community,” he said.

The grounds of the Calhoun County Courthouse were teeming with the excited attendees who were enjoying the music, dancers and concessions.

The winning units of the parade are as follows:

  • Antique car: Hudson Brothers.

  • Commercial Float: Piggly Wiggly.

  • Non-commercial: John Ford Middle School Honor Court.

  • Homemade float: John Ford Dance Team.

  • Religious: St. Matthews Church of God.

  • Honor Guard: Jamil Temple, Sumter.

  • Overall: Hudson Brothers.
