SCISAA tournament begins today
Monday, April 23, 2007T&D Report
Last year was a golden opportunity for the Orangeburg Prep golf team.
With the Country Club of Orangeburg serving as the host site, winning the SCISAA Class 3-A championship was more than just a slim possibility for the Indians.
In the end, only team member Jacob Burger would gain some semblence of glory as he was named Most Outstanding Golfer in Class 3-A after firing the lowest score in the tournament. Despite Burger's efforts, OPS finished two places lower and five strokes higher than where coach David Lackey hoped to be at the end of two days.
At 8:48 a.m. today, the Indians will get a second chance at winning the elusive Class 3-A title on its home course when first-round action starts at the Country Club of Orangeburg.
OPS is coming off a 29-1 season which ended with a three-stroke loss to Cardinal Newman on Friday. On the same course a day earlier, however, team member Carmen Jones won her third Girls Open championship in four years after rallying from three strokes down and defeating sixth-grader Christina Foster of Pinewood Prep in a playoff.
Over 36 schools expected to compete for team championships in Classes 3-A, 2-A and A in the two-day event. Also looking to defend their titles are Spartanburg Christian (Class A) and Carolina Academy (Class 2-A).
Tee times will be the same for both days with Class A starting at 8 a.m., followed by Class 3-A at 8:48 a.m. and Class 2-A at 1 p.m.
