Hoops job still in limbo at SCSU

By THOMAS GRANT JR., T&D Senior Sports WriterMonday, April 23, 2007

It goes without saying there are eyes aplenty on South Carolina State right now. The upcoming Democratic presidential debate is one reason, while the other is the still-unfilled position of SCSU head men’s basketball coach.

Next Sunday will mark a month since the university decided to end the brief but controversial coaching tenure of Jamal Brown. Yet while Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rivals like Hampton, Florida A&M and Delaware State continue to upgrade their rosters, the Bulldogs remain one of five NCAA Division I-A men’s basketball programs without a head coach.

While it’s understandable and laudable SCSU officials have devoted a considerable amount of energy towards insuring Thursday’s historical event goes without a hitch, having a vacancy in men’s basketball (as well as volleyball and track) right now sends a shaky message to still available potential recruits and even those already signed by Brown who could try to opt out of their scholarships.

As Athletics Director Charlene Johnson gets ready to peruse through the reportedly 40-plus applications received so far, here are some suggestions:

1. Keep an open mind about all available coaching options

Given the possibility of legal action from Brown to recoup his remaining salary (he was reportedly set to make $103,000 annually over the next three seasons), the SCSU may opt to play it safe and stay in-house rather than seek out a more expensive new head coach. Interim head coach Ray Martin has head coaching experience and seemingly has a good rapport with the returning players. However, the school may want ask itself whether Bulldog supporters would prefer a “fresh start” with someone with no ties with the previous administration.

Speaking of ties:

2. Look beyond coaches with connections to Cy Alexander

The university has tried had to recapture Alexander’s winning formula in their past two hirings of former assistants Ben Betts and Brown. In the four years since Alexander’s departure, the Bulldogs have neither appeared in the NCAA tournament nor even made the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament final. The team’s overall record during the four-year span is 64-56 overall, 47-25 in the MEAC, includes back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since a three-season stretch between 1989-92.

This is not to say former assistants Francis Simmons (Bethune-Cookman) or Tim Gates (Allen University) are not capable to turning things around. With the past two MEAC tournament winners Hampton and Florida A&M building their team’s success more on up-tempo offenses with highly-skilled perimeter players, it may be time for SCSU to look in a new direction.

3. Look for proven winners and coaches ’hungry’ for the SCSU job.

Just down the road on Highway 70 in Denmark, Voorhees’ men’s basketball coach Andre Williams has led his program to a 41-13 record the past two seasons and has reached the NAIA Division I Tournament in three of the last four years. The university could also once again seek out the T&D Region’s winningest high school boys’ basketball coach and six-time state champion at Calhoun County Zam Fredrick, one of the five finalists interviewed last year. Both men have shown sustained success with their respective programs and may find appeal in moving up without having to uproot their families.

SCSU could also go the same route as Hampton in hiring a well-prepared assistant coach (Kevin Nickelberry) with strong recruiting connections who was ’hungry’ to lead his own program. A coach whose resume indicates similar attributes is University of Alabama-Birmingham assistant coach Tracy Dildy, another finalist from last year’s SCSU coaching search. There’s also University of South Carolina assistant coach Rick Duckett, although in a telephone message two weeks ago, he indicated SCSU officials have not contacted him.

4. Put together a search committee with people who know to look for in a successful coach

If SCSU is committed to returning to its winning ways in men’s basketball, the committee should include more input from former players. Guys like Rod Blakney, Jackie Robinson, Jerome Stewart, Miguel Burns or Bobby McGowens, were a part of the team’s past glory and could provide a more personal, passionate insight into the program’s needs. There’s also nothing wrong with seeking consultation from people with no SCSU ties who can provide an unbiased perspective which was missing from the previous search committee.

5. The time is now for a decision

Once the presidential debate is over, the athletics department must devote its full energies towards filling its coaches vacancies and quickly. With the school year winding down and the pool of unsigned recruits dwindling by the day, SCSU finds itself not only having to make the right choice but a quick one. More importantly, the sooner the school can start looking forward to the future and put behind them a disappointing athletics year (save for tennis), the better.

" I think that Frank Smith from Clemson is the right man for the job....he impressed me on campus, and he has been with a winning coach his entire career. Coach Purnell has beuilt Clemsons program the right way, just like he did at Dayton, and at Radford, and Smith was with him the whole way. I think he is the best candidate to lead our team "

" Do your research on some the candidates, most are well qualified and know how to win. Hunt is young and has something to prove. Carter has been to the tourney twice. Allen is a HBCU legend. Most of these guys have the qualities expressed in the article. Sounds like SCSU needs a diamond in the rough. I think there might be one in the pool. "

" I can assure you if Coach Williams get an opportunity to Coach the Bulldogs the Buldog family will LOVE him. This guy is unbelieverable. If you only knew what he goes through at Voorhees. Some of the Coaches you are talking about have NEVER been successful. At least Coach Williams have won. I know he would win in the MEAC! Also to Noonie you said Coach Williams could not handle running the program at Scst (you must not know this guy) and the last couple of coaches you had at state did a wonderful job coming from D-I programs. Coach know the game and for the VC Soph student who said Coach Williams never held practice and let his us guys play pick-up ball you must be MAD that Coach CUT you or FAILED you? What Coach did more at Voorhees? He WON more championships and the team played in the Natl Tourn 3 years in a row. Image if we did practice since we never did? "

" I'm sorry but coaching at VC and S.C State are not the same. I respect the fact that he's done a great job at VC and its good to see that he a has a loyal fan base. Coach Williams would never make it at scsu. We need a proven winner, recruiter, someone with more experience when it comes to running a basketball program. This is not a knock on Coach Willams... just my opinion. "

" I have been around a long time here in this area and I must say we have had some successful hardworking coaches on all levels from high schools to the college ranks. SC State can do a number of things with the job. They can go after a major d-1 assistant like Rick Duckett of USC, a veteran coach such as the currently retired Coach Chaplin (Denmark Tech)or Woodard from Claflin, a young and energetic coach like Williams or Ed Glover of Voorhees (women) who was an assistant with the Claflin men when they won back to back EIAC championships and upset SC State in a Garden City Classic. SC State can also hire a successful high school coach like Zam Frederick,Willie Thomas or bring in somebody we never heard of. There are a number of options and scenarios, but what ever they do it will not satisfy everybody. Coaches on the college level come and go, whatever SC State decides to do we need to support them as alumni and fans because nothing is guaranteed in life and this job could be open again from one year, two years, etc......... "

ALTHOUGH YOUR COMMENTARY WAS BRUTAL, YOU DO HOWEVER RAISE SOME INTERESTING QUESTIONS. 1) WHY DOES BRANTLEY EVANS HAVE SO MUCH TO DO WITH ATHLETICS AND WHY DID DR. HUGINE CREATE A POSITION FOR HIM? BRANTLEY WAS A BOARD MEMBER RECENTLY. HE GOT THAT POSITION BECAUSE OF FAMILY TIES AND A FAVOR FOR SOMEONE. HE NO LONGER HAS A BUSINESS OR VIABLE INCOME FROM ANOTHER EMPLOYER, SO WHAT HE DID WAS, RELINQUISH HIS POSITION AS A BOARD MEMBER. IN RETURN FOR HELPING TO HIRE DR. HUGINE WHEN HE WAS A BOARD MEMBER, DR. HUGINE CREATED A POSITION IN THE ATHELETICS DEPT. FOR HIM. HE HAD TO RELINQUISH HIS BOARD MEMBER POSITION IN ORDER FOR THE UNIVERSITY TO HIRE HIM. SO, BASICALLY THE UNIVERSITY PAYS HIM A SALARY OF $80,000.00 TO REALLY DO NOTHING. THIS IS A WASTED EXPENSE FOR THE UNIVERSITY. THE A.D. ALREADY HAD AN ASST.. SO WHY DID THEY HIRE BRANTLEY TO BE HER 2ND ASST.. (A WASTE OF TAX PAYERS AND STUDENTS MONEY). "

And look at guys like Francis Simmon(BCC, SCSU) Tim Gates(Allen,SCSU) and Horace Broadnax(Savannah State, BCC). They been in program D-1 programs and help build them up. The last time SCSU been to the Title game was Ben Betts 1st year. Gates and Simmon was on the staff. Simmon was on Cy staff the entirer time Cy was there. Why he can't get interview? "

Would real coach allow that.. The players practice on there owns without the coach, they even travel to some game by themselves and the coach would meet them there. Coach Williams was my teacher, this guy never came to class to teach, he was the worst. Thats why hes not here. "

About to be fired again for not winning. Frankie Allen got fired from Howard. Just got fired from Radford. He is one of Cy guys. Ray Martin don't have no luck he's been fired every where he went. These are some of the guys who got a interviews or got interviewed. But we are looking for a high profile guy. Nothing high profile about these guys. These are going to leave after 3 years. They are build a resume on us. If we hirer one of these guys the job will be back open 3 years from now. Watch. They are going to do a Ben Betts. Can some answer this. Did Brantley play any sports? How do he have so much power in athletic? Our President need to step in and put a end to this mess. We need to open the job back up until we get the right guy. " Coach William is a JOKE, The guy is not a good coach, a great JC recruiter but he's no coach. There's a big diffrent between coaching and bring in good talent in and leting them play. Voorhees College sould have won more games, look at the schedule and see who they play. I'm thinking he's wrote those comments, because I don't remember seeing anyone from SCSU at a Voorhees game, the style of basketbal is run and gun, we get beat by teams that have less talent but can run a offense. Don't be fool by his record, what did he do when he made NAIA. Voorhees has never been at the bottom of any conference. Coach William wasn't the first to take a team to the NAIA. He's not the first to have a All American. He's the first to win in a Conference with Allen and Morris College, playing every bible school he could find to boost his winning record, Guess what he can't hide in the MEAC. "

I have seen most of these coaches we are talking about coach. I like Coach Williams at Voorhees. He is a young coach what we need. I also like his coaching style something that will attract top HS and JUCO players to our school and most of all this guy have taken Voorhees from the bottom and made it a top 20 program in NAIA and they do not have scholarships. "

Do you really think they would consider him as his replacement???? No! My answer is based on what I know first hand about the situation at USC. "

As for the other coaches Coach Frederick is a HS Coach I do not think that will be a good fit even though he is a good coach and his team been good. I also have seen the Voorhees Coach and he is a young man who teams plays hard and a style kids these days LOVE to play. I know Voorhees is a NAIA school but that coach has put VC on the map. I hope SCST looks for a young energetic coach who wants to be here for a long time and someone who can get us in the BIG DANCE. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOL BY THE SCHOOLS THE CURRENTLY WORK AT. "

Coaching is a business and a job; to say you know someone personally doesn't mean anything when it comes to money. If Rick Duckett takes 25,000 to coach SCSU I would change my mine. I don't know him personally but I do know people, and I know people do not take less money for more work and more pressure to win, unless he's looking for an opportunity to be a Head Coach. Most of the other guys mention for the position would be more that happy to take 60,000 a year to coach at SCSU, I honestly don't think Rick Duckett would. "

Voorhees former Coaches Cedric Baker, now at division one Savannah State and Shawn Walker of the CIAA champions Elizabeth City State. Both current Voorhees Coaches were last year's T&D Coaches of the year and will most likely keep those honors this year. Voorhees's mens team could probably have beaten SC State in the last two years. Both Claflin's men and women teams have defeated us(SCSU)in the Garden City Classic. Maybe that is why we don't play the classic anymore. If you know anything about athletics the only difference in college divisions are the amount of funds that are put in the programs. "

" This program needs someone in charge of it that has strong ties to the South Carolina area. The only way the program is going to be successful is by hiring someone who wants to establish a program. In doing so, that person must recruit South Carolina and other southeastern states extremely hard. Needless to say, it must be someone with excellent character and a high basketball IQ. This job probably does need to go to an experience local high school or college coach. This will enable the school to establish some type of stability. The last thing SCSU needs is someone who is going to be there two or three years and gone. Your responsibility as a search committee for the institution should be integrity, establishing continuity, and winning.....That's how you build a program. "

Coach Zam Fredrick can bring a winning and a very discipined team to the unniversity. He has proven that he, unlike many great players, can coach the game even better than he played it. It could be that he might not consider it the best career move for him but it certainly is worth the university pursuing for their best interest. He will not always be available but if he is at the current he would be a great choice. "
