Two who died in I-26 crash identified
By T&D Staff Wednesday, May 02, 2007Officials have released the names of two men who died in a single-car accident on Sunday after their car ran off Interstate 26 in Orangeburg County.
According to the S.C. Highway Patrol Web site, Orin Brown, of Charleston, and Xavier Lamar Johnson, of Mount Pleasant, both 18, were killed when the vehicle they were riding in left the road and crashed.
Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth said the men were passengers in a four-door, 2001 Saturn driven by C.J. Holmes, 21, of North Charleston.
The car was traveling eastbound on I-26 at mile 141 when it ran off the left side of the highway around 5:02 a.m. Sunday. When the driver overcorrected, the vehicle crossed the highway, went off the right side and collided with some trees, Edgeworth said.
One of the men was wearing a seat belt while the other was not.
The driver of the Saturn was taken by Orangeburg County EMS to The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, Edgeworth said.
A fourth male in the car, seated in the right rear of the vehicle, was airlifted to Palmetto Health-Richland in Columbia.
Troopers spent about an hour clearing the accident, which blocked traffic on the interstate.
The two men were among four people killed statewide on South Carolina’s roads this past weekend.
