Applications are now available for Safe Routes to School funding, and Clark Middle School in Orangeburg will be the site for one of the seven preliminary SRTS workshops being held around the state.

SRTS funds can be used for infrastructure improvements and education, encouragement and enforcement programs that enable and encourage children to safely walk and bicycle to school. Each selected school can receive up to $200,000.

SRTS is a federally-funded program administered by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Applications will be accepted from schools, however, school districts, government and nonprofit organizations can apply for funding on behalf of a school. Schools with kindergarten through eighth are eligible. No local match is required for funding.

A representative of each applicant is required to attend the Safe Routes to School Preliminary Workshop. The workshops provide attendees with information about the comprehensive nature of the program and eligible uses of the SRTS funds.

Important information about the application for funding and the selection criteria will be presented as well. The schedule and information about the required registration for the workshops are available online at www.scdot.org/community/saferoutes.shtml.

The Clark Middle School workshop will be held at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 4.

For more information, contact Patti Dalis, SRTS coordinator, SCDOT, DalisPA@scdot.org or 803-737-4073.
