Darla Moore, founder and chair of the Palmetto Institute, will be the keynote speaker at SouthernCarolina Alliance’s Anniversary Celebration on Tuesday, May 22, at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie campus in Allendale.
Moore, a resident of Lake City and New York City, has played a leadership role in public discourse on the issues of the changing economy, including the issues of alternative fuels, agribusiness and workforce development.
“This event will commemorate a decade of evolving partnership in our region among the counties of Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, and Hampton counties,” said Danny Black, president of SouthernCarolina Alliance. “We are fortunate to have this innovative leader from South Carolina, who has been recognized nationally for her accomplishments in business, joining us for our celebration.”
Moore founded the Palmetto Institute in 2002 as a nonprofit think tank aimed at bolstering per capita income in South Carolina, and she serves on the boards of the University of South Carolina and New York University Medical School and Hospitals.
The University of South Carolina’s business school is named in her honor, and she is the first woman profiled on the cover of Fortune magazine and named to the List of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in American Business.
Moore has served on numerous corporate boards, including Hospital Corporation of America and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She currently serves on the board of the South Financial Group and MPS Group and the National Advisory Board of JP Morgan. Moore was formerly a managing director of the predecessor Chemical Bank.
She recently received the Business Person of the Year Award from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. Moore is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has an MBA from George Washington University.
