‘Art of the Americas’ debuts at I.P. Stanback Museum
By Special to The T&DFriday, June 08, 2007South Carolina State University’s I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium will feature a week-long exhibition, planetarium show and lecture focusing on Hispanic culture in the Americas.
“Art of the Americas” is a mixed media art exhibition comprised of art on loan from the collections of Dr. Leonard McIntyre, Dr. Ruben Silvestry, Mark Dabney, Carol Cato, Mary Beth Doucette and Ellen Zisholtz. It includes paintings, photographs, pottery and Latin American-inspired art by Jane Kozachek.
The exhibition will open to the public with a reception at the museum at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7.
The planetarium will feature “Astronomy of the Ancient Maya,” a show that focuses on the interconnection between Mayan astronomical observations and Mayan religion, and the role of the heavens in the ancient culture’s mythology and prophecy.
Dr. Arturo Ortiz Veloz of Lenoir-Rhyne College will deliver a lecture, “The African Cultural Presence in Caribbean Poetry,” at the museum at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 12.

Regular hours for the I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. To arrange special hours for school and other groups, contact the museum.
