There's a new mayor in St. George
By T&D Staff Sunday, June 10, 2007ST. GEORGE -- Anne Johnston was elected mayor of St. George in April. Now, on Monday night, she'll be sworn into office.
Johnston won the town's mayoral election, but the town election commission threw out the results after her opponents cited numerous irregularities at the polls. A judge overturned the commission's decision, but Johnston had to wait 30 days to see if anyone would appeal his decision.
Opponent Kenny Pendarvis had already said he had faith the judge made the right decision. On Friday, the last day to appeal the decision, opponent Charles Frazier stopped by to say he wouldn't appeal, either, Johnston said.
"It's over now," Johnston said. "I am very happy for this town that we can put this behind us and move forward."
Johnston, a veteran educator and school administrator, received 323 votes to 312 votes for Frazier and 40 votes for Pendarvis. Veteran Mayor David Sojourner did not seek re-election to a four-year term.
The election challenge led to some confusion in the town after officials swore in other town council members, but not Johnston. She sought an injunction against the town and Circuit Court Judge James Williams restrained a May 14 meeting.
Williams decided the town had to operate with its old council, since the commission threw out the whole election, and couldn't chose new committees until the election was decided.
