After 22 years with District 5, O-W’s principal leaving

Rodney Zimmerman sits back in his office, reflecting on the four years that he’s been the principal at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. For a man who has been responsible for 2,000 students, he has not had too much time to take a moment and process it.

Zimmerman sits in his office chair, thinking about all the fun that he has had running the large school. He savors the progress and strides the school has made under his watch, but most of all what he will truly take away from this experience is the memory of the students whose lives he has touched.

The culmination of touching those students’ lives is watching them walk on graduation night every year and receive their diplomas. Since becoming principal in 2003, Zimmerman has watched no fewer than 325 students graduate each year.

On June 30, Zimmerman will leave Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School to become the principal at Eau Claire High School in Richland County.

Zimmerman says he will bring the same dedication at Eau Claire that he brought to O-W.

“I expect to offer the kids there the same opportunity that’s here at O-W. Eau Claire is going to be a school that is on the move,” he said.

Zimmerman says he has mixed emotions about leaving a school that has become so dear to him over the years.

“I love the school, I love the students, I love at O-W, I love the faculty and staff. I’m going to miss the community’s support,” he said.

He will also miss the special memories that made his time at O-W so memorable. Zimmerman mentions the school’s annual bonfire during homecoming week, the step shows and the pep rallies as some of the good times.

“The kids have been very involved,” he said.

Mr. Z, as the students affectionately call him, has been very involved as well. For the last 22 years, Zimmerman has been member the District 5 team.

Zimmerman grew up in Bowman and attended college at South Carolina State University. He received a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. This fall he will receive a Education Specialist degree from USC.

Zimmerman started his tenure at District 5 as a teaching assistant at Marshall Elementary. It was there that his first student called him Mr. Z. He recalls that a fifth grade student approached him and said that he couldn’t pronounce his name. The student asked him if could call him Mr. Z. The name stuck.

From Marshall Elementary, Zimmerman was tapped to be band director at Howard Middle School. He served in the same capacity at O-W, and later he was called on be the assistant principal at Howard Middle School. Mr. Z’s carousel between Howard and O-W continued when he became the assistant principal at O-W.

His career continued to advance and he was later named the director of the District 5 Technology Center, holding that job until he was named principal of O-W.

O-W was recently awarded the Palmetto Gold award for excellence and next fall it will be a showcase school for the state. Most importantly, in the four years that he has been principal, more than 1,300 students have received high school diplomas.

“I believe I’ve had an impact, along with the support of the parents and teachers, with the programs we’ve had in place. The kids have really advanced in preparing them for future endeavors,” he said.

Zimmerman says that the faculty and staff have wished him well and that they have enjoyed working with him.

“They’ve said they hope I’m successful in what I do. Some of them mention jokingly that I’ll be back, and that they’ll see me when I get back,” he said.

While a new principal has yet to be named for O-W, Zimmerman offered a little advice to his successor: “Always put the children first, do what’s best for the students, faculty and staff, also seek support from the district and community.”

Zimmerman, despite his busy schedule, does have time for hobbies outside the school. He is a choir director, and also loves to read and travel.

Zimmerman and his wife have made a pledge to travel to all 50 states before they reach the age of 50. They only have one more state to visit, New Mexico.

Zimmerman’s travels may now lead him to another destination, but he will never forget his experience at O-W. He said he walked through the O-W’s halls one night recently just thinking about how much he will miss it. However, that is not what he will miss most about O-W.

“Mostly I’ll miss the kids,” Mr. Z said.

" Everyone please stop using word that you don’t have a clue what they mean. “Demeanor” and someone please tell me what a “clinque” is? Just write what you know how to say. You aren’t getting any extra credibility because of your word usage. Even if you were getting credit for it, your name is not being displayed. So for me please proof read and if you aren’t sure of the word, use a word that you are sure of. "

just wondering why wrote on Jun 28, 2007 6:19 PM:

" I am wondering why things cannot change in Orangeburg 5. Yes there is a clinque in Orangeburg 5; however, there is also a clinque in Orangeburg. It's all about what people have instead of what they can do. I will be glad when we come to the realization that people need to be hired for their skills and as a district and town, we will be better off. In the environmental services' department someone came in and moved up to supervision and is reaking havoc with the personnel. How can this happen? In other areas persons move up without the credentials and/or the experience in the area(s) they serve. We need to respect all persons and especially reward those who experiences give them the necessary skills to perform their duties in a professional manner. It is not all about credentials, it is about respecting persons for the job(s) they perform. As a community, we need to do what is necessary to make others feel they are welcomed. New persons to this community often comment about the clinque in Orangeburg and they do not find it in other places such as Columbia or Atlanta. We need to turn over a new leaf and try hard see all persons as equal. There should be no little me's and big you's in our community or looking at a person because of the size of their home or the type of car they drive. What have those things have to do with anything We should all be about helping others. "

" Something is going on this school district. Mr. Zimmerman leaving is just the beginning. Several other excellent administrators are leaving the district also. As a parent and taxpayer some questions need to be answered. Why are all of these principals and assistant principals leaving the district all of a sudden? This could mean trouble for our kids and the community. "

You have always made it your business to know your students on a first and last name basis. You always had faith in my leadership and potential. I know that you will touch the lives of your upcoming students as you did mine and others. Stay blessed! And continue to be the wonderful, fun, caring person that you are. And by the way.... Does your arm still hurt? "

" Orangburg has lost another great leader. We need to wake up and start getting involve in what going on in our schools and city. All the comments are great.... The good ones and the bad ones. No one is liked by everyone not even God. This is another example of the Orangeburg Dist 5 way of bussiness. Once they get the SUV and two car garage, they forget what its like to stand for something that helps our kids and communties. MR Z was too good for OW. He has a vision far greater than Smokes and his "do what I say group". Change is good for everyone. Maybe as many concern citzens that replied to this article will come together and fixed our the real problems in Dist 5. If you really care you should get involved or things will only go back downhill. Gangs,Drugs, Fights and Horrible Test Scores. Parents wake up or shout up... "

" Mr. Z you made it. I am really proud of you. I have nothing but great memories of you. Most of the memories are stories that were very funny that I still tell people now. The concerts at R.E. Howard, band practice and band class all very fond memories. I remember you challenging us with your curriculum (playing music that was on a high school level, while in middle school). You were fair (except that time in 7th grade you moved me to last chair for talking, that was Maurice Haynes talking :). You were honest, loyal and stood up for us. You were brave (I remember you taking us on trips to compete you had band picnic’s and Christmas concerts all that went off so smoothly because of you). You did everything so effortlessly you made it seem like anyone could do it (we see that is not the case). Lastly, I remember your love for your son. Everyday you would come in and begin our day with “ Yall want to hear what my baby did yesterday…” You are one in a million and good luck with all of your future endeavors. "

" Mr. Z has done a tremendous job at both OW and The Technology Center. Even though I have graduated already, I will miss him. He is a wonderful person who really did touch the lives of many of the students who still attend OW as well as ones who have already graduated. I still remember when he first became principal at OW, many of the students thought that we would not like him but we soon found out that he was one of the best people that we could ever come in contact with. He is a very considerate person, and even though he held a high position, he still listened to those who he had authority over. Mr. Z, as you make your closure at OW and The Technology Center, and open your heart to Eau Claire High School, I hope that the students there will love you just as much as we have. I also hope that they realize that you are someone special who can offer so much to them, they just have to be willing to accept it. Mr. Z, you really made your mark at OW and The Technology Center!!! And you have made a great impact on many people's lives!!! All the time and effort you have put into helping us, is greatly appreciated!!! I, We, LOVE YOU, and you will be greatly missed!!! "

Instead of the berating and name calling that one sees in the comments in some of the articles in this newspaper, here you have an example of the community coming together and supporting one of its own. What a great credit and testament to Orangeburg you have not only in this man, but to the many people who have commented here. There is still hope for your community. Here you have lifting up and not tearing down - and that is the way ahead for so many small communities rocked by the loss of much of their industrial base. Keep it up Orangeburg, and let this story be an example to all. "

Board Chairman wrote on Jun 20, 2007 2:49 AM:

" A lot of intelligent comments have been made concerning Mr. Zimmerman. I really appreciate and honor every thought proces that went into these discussions. However, I am inclined to set the record straight on some of the comments made by different individuals. To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Zimmerman was fired or relieved of his position over "shirttail" or any other reason thereof. When I spoke to Mr. Zimmerman sometimes a ago about his intended departure from District five, he told me he was going to work for the State dept of education as a principal specialist. To me, this is a big promotion. If truly Mr. Zimmerman was fired for any other reason(s), the board is not aware of this. We are not in the business of firing anyone. The board has a lot of limitations. We were told by the superintendent that Mr. Zimmerman has resigned his current position inorder to accept a position as a principal specialist at Eau Claire High School. The board only hires and fires the superintendent, whereas the superintendent hires and fires other employees. If any board member(s), or special interest group brought pressure to relieve Mr. Zimmerman of his job because of shirttail problem,I am not aware of that, and, could not have been in favor of asking him to resign. After all, O.W. High School, is not the only school in our district that had the problem. Personally, I have had three graduates from O.W. High School and an upcoming 10th grader, and they all appreciate Mr. Zimmerman. I guess, if one wants to really find out the truth why Mr. Zimmerman left the institution, that is, whether he was fired over "shirttail' or if there are other mitigating factors, the best person to ask is Mr. Zimmerman. Once again, for all that I know, the board never took a vote to fire Mr. Zimmerman. I would be glad to talk to anyone, or group of people if confusion still persists. About the question of board incompetency, I would leave that to your judgement. In my class at the University level, all my students cannot be classified as incompetent. Therefore, every board member cannot be incompetent. May God give us the spirit of understanding "

If anything was going wrong, students hardly knew because he always took care of the problem. Yes he was firm, but he was playful at the same time. Even though I'm not in high school anymore I was devastated when I found out he was leaving O-W. What was more devastating was the fact that he was going to Eau Claire. " I cannot believe a great leader, loved by 98% of his staff and reverenced by his students was forced to resigned because of the NEW shirtail rule! A rule that was initiated near the end of the school year! Please someboby tell me this is not so! There has to be other reasons we do not know about. Because if this is the main reason our District office (Mr. Smoak) and school board members appear petty and incompetent. If an administrator can keep order in a school the size of OW, keep incidents of gang violence at bay and the students respect him, he is the man I want watching over my children! My daughter is an honors student at OW, I was fearful of her going to OW initially but I must say her first two years were excellent! She admitts their are problems at OW but she feels safe and have confidences in the administration. This means sooo much for my peace of mind. Whatever the reason for MR.Z leaving I wish him well and pray District Five will find a principal with the same qualities, who will put our children first. "

Tiredoftheclique wrote on Jun 16, 2007 1:22 PM:

" To the people of Orangeburg School District Five, it is with deepest regards that our district is being run by incompetent board members and a superintendent. The community should know that our schools will not grow with the old ways of leadership that we are currently under. Parents should be concern that our district does not have a unified program for their children in ELA (Anderson Five’s unified curriculum is not a program). Ask why the specialists didn’t develop one, instead of spending thousands of dollars for one that does not meet the needs of our community? They should also know that teachers are tired of putting up a fight for books, smaller class sizes, tissue, paper, copies and new learning programs. Take a look at the hirer ups in the district office and see what things they are fighting for. Most of them are Terring and have not pushed for changes that would benefit our children. Employees are not given a fair chance for promotion because if you aren’t close with the awesome three at the district office you can forget about getting a higher position. In other districts they guard their schools that meet AYP. In this district my child’s school MES was given a leader whose school never met AYP and now MES is not meeting AYP. As parents we should demand an explanation of this move. But I already know the answer it was a favor at the expense of the children. Until new leaders are in the district office our children will never reach their potential with the tunnel vision leaders we have now. Lastly, I would like to congratulate Mr. Zimmerman on his new position. I know that you will do well in your new position and will realize that in Richland One you will be able to run your school with the support of your superintendent. "

Mrs. Shirttail wrote on Jun 15, 2007 4:57 PM:

" In response to someone's question about shirttails, Mr. Z as well as all of the other administrators in Orangeburg 5 were required to have students to tuck in their shirttails at the conclusion of the Christmas Break. While the Board and the Superintendents intentions were good, the timing of the new rule was inappropriate. The Board and the Superintendent being removed from the day to day operations of a school do not realize how hard it is to start a new procedure/rule in the middle of the school year. As a parent of an OW student, it's not that Mr. Z didn't try to enforce the shirttail rule it's just that with so many other things to address and limited help by others, it was near impossible! Tucking shirttails is a must in schools for safety however, this is something that should be started at the beginning of a school year and not in the middle. I think that parents as well as employees would have done a better job of assisting with this rule if it began at the beginning of the year! So, to answer your question, Mr. Z was not actually fired (because he resigned) due to shirttails however, he was being ridiculed by the Board because all of his 2000 students were not tucking in their shirts on a consistent basis.I hope this has answered your question. "

I hope the next superintendent will be better than what we have. It is time for a positive change in District 5. "

Mr. Z always led his assigned school commanding excellence; Mr. Zimmerman at the helm led to numerous awards each school he supervised. It is a sad day for District 5, and it is my hope that a leader with such charisma as Mr. Z is positioned to led the flagship school of District 5. Again, congratulations Mr. Zimmerman; I'm sure we will be hearing great thing about Eau Claire very soon! "

Maybe members of that famous click if they are still here, will soon find out just how much you meant to O-W when they are out seeking other employment. You never miss your water until your well runs dry.The problem with the 2 percent at O-W was they were (consistently inconsistent) it takes a lot to run a school the size of O-W but you Mr Z did it with class, dignity and respect and the other 98 p[ercent of us salute you for a job very well done. Eau Claire you have a saviour coming to you. We love you Mr. Z may god always be with you and continue to bless you. "

" Mr. Z I am sure the Class of 2000 will miss you the most. Some of us have known you since the 5th grade when you were the band director at Howard. Our most fondest memory is when you lead us to #3 in the state. No one would could not believe that the Orange Pride Marching Band could stand a chance to win such a title. Even to this day we will treasure the moment when we were placed in third. We give you much respect and thanks for teaching young black kids like us, that no matter what socioeconomic status you are from, gender, or race, you can prove to people that you can do anything if you don't settle for mediocracy. Always strive to for the best. The class of 2000 wishes you the best and we pray that the next person who steps in, well have the same determination for O-W. "

The faculty and staff from The Technology center always supported you and they always have good things to say about you. However, you wouldn't get the same response from O-W because they wanted not to change. A team is what make a principal or director. "
