SANTEE – Among a field of men and through a brief period of rain, a 14-year-old managed to separate himself from his opponents to win the Santee Amateur Golf Tournament on Sunday.

Austin Cody, who has been playing golf since the age of 2, shot an opening-round score of 69. This put him in a three-way tie with former champion Mike Cobb and former College of Charleston golf coach Daniel Dukes.

“I knew that it would be tough today going up against Mike Cobb, but I just went out and played my game,” Cody said.

Cody, a student at Pinewood Preparatory School, posted a score of 73 to win the tournament by three strokes. Dukes finished in second place and Bob Paulling, a native of St. Matthews, ended the day in third place.

In the championship B flight, Howard Vroon took top honors after shooting a 73. Vroon, who is the golf coach at Charleston Southern, fired 73 to stay atop the championship B leaderboard. Matt Wood placed second with a final-round score of 76, while Chris Asbell posted a 77 and came in third.

The Senior Championship proved to be very competitive. Donald Hardy overcame a three-stroke deficit to win his second Santee Amateur Senior title. Hardy shot a 76 in the opening round and a 71 in the final round. He joins Bob Varn, who finished in fourth place, as the only other two-time champion of the tournament. Johnny Graham finished his weekend in second place by two strokes. Rodger Dandridge put up a 78 in his final round to take third place.

Robby Robbins was pleased with the number of players that played in this year’s competition.

“The turnout was great. We feel like we made the right call by having the tournament this weekend,” Robbins said.

A total of 137 players competed for top honors in nine different flights throughout the weekend.
