Claflin Panthers land
yet another ex-Bruin

Miriam Walker-Samuels is not the only Claflin head basketball coach with an apparent talent "pipeline" to Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.

The latest Bruin to sign with Panthers' men's basketball coach Ron Woodard is shooting guard Edward Green. A two-year letterman, the 5-10 incoming freshman provided a scoring punch from the Region 7-AAAA champions as he averaged 12.8 points, four rebounds and three steals per game as a senior.

Green's best outing took place Jan. 30 at defending region and Class 4-A Lower State champion Goose Creek. He scored a career-best 32-points in the 77-74 victory which clinched the region championship for O-W. The Bruins went undefeated in Region 7-AAAA and finished the season with a 20-4 mark.

"I think Coach Woodard needed a scoring two and he can flat out shoot it," O-W head coach Alex Barron. "He'll help in the shooting department."

The signing comes almost a week after the Pantherettes received letters of intent from O-W backup center Lasaundra Barron and Swansea forward and Class 3-A Player of the Year Donisha Albert and former Bruinette point guard Alisha Holmes, transferring to Claflin from East Tennessee State.

Green joins a Claflin roster which includes former O-W forward/center Casey Johnson and is entering its third season transitioning into the NCAA Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The conference also includes Benedict College, where Barron's son, Zachary, will be entering his junior season after helping the Tigers reach the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The other former players under Barron also suiting up next season are guard Rob Fields of Catawba College and center Kendrick Johnson of Newberry, who was named to the South Atlantic Conference's All-Freshman Team after shattering the school record for career blocks with 45.

" To OW, you sound so stupid. If coach Barron doesn't have to work then why does he? If my son was such a "baller" I'll be d*** I would be on anybody's clock. So get your mind right. And talk about spell check, comment is spelled with two ms not one. And proof read your sentence that starts with secondly. Lastly, nobady cares about Claflin anyway; especially their sports. Their boys team has never been any good and an athletic program can never build around a women's team. Their girls are no where near as good as they used to be either. So you should think before you speak. "

" First I would like to respond to the comentby Bulldawg on June 16, 2007. Coach is not the AD at OW. So when you coment on something get your facts straight. Secondly I don't think Coach Barron have to work if he choose not to. Just check out the Rams and you will see why. Also you need to use spell check. It is Claflin not Clafins. And lastly since you are such a great judge of talent why don't you apply for the recruiter's job at Claflin, I am sure they can use you. "

Oburg wrote on Jun 18, 2007 4:50 PM:

" Whats so dumb is that you're making this into Claflin vs. SCSU thread. Bulldawg wasn't the only one stating the obvious. If you can read, you would realize that your very own was saying the same exact thing. I watched this Albert young lady all year and she is a talented young lady, but the rest of these recruits are a hot mess. Bulldawg was very accurate when talking about these recruits with the exception of Albert. If these same recruits would have signed with SCSU I'm willing to bet you SCSU alumni would be very upset if they were recruiting backups. I can almost bet you that Coach Barron will be on Clafins staff in the next 2years. "

responsetoBulldawg wrote on Jun 17, 2007 12:21 PM:

" No, the problem is you're part of the crabs in the barrell syndrome in which anybody who doesn't attend SCSU should be demonized. You have one girl (Albert) who was the Class 3-A Player of the Year, an award once won by Ivory Latta, and another (Holmes), who's better than any of the point guards SCSU is limping out on the court these days. Second, if SCSU had signed the same local players, it would have made the same news. Third, Claflin is in the third year of applying for membership in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Be the judge of how they performance in 2-3 years, not now. "

Bulldawg wrote on Jun 16, 2007 8:20 AM:

" I made no mention of SCSU because the article was not about them. Their basketball programs; especially the womens has been horrible for a long time; are no where the level of when I was attended SCSU. I am just stating the obvious here, Claflin is getting press for basically doing nothing. Doesn't it seem strange that that OW's athletic directors daughter (Barron)gets signed by Claflin. One hand washes the other I guess. "

Benedict wrote on Jun 14, 2007 7:33 PM:

" Claflin catching feelings. We are only calling it the way we see it without getting personal. I dont see much success coming from Claflin and will not for some time. You must do better "

scsudogpound wrote on Jun 14, 2007 7:30 PM:

" Do me a favor and leave SCSU out of your mouth. If you want to get personal I can on and on about Claflin but i will not stoop to your level. This is about Claflin and its poor recruits. Nothing personal these are terrific ladies and gentleman, but why are you recruiting backups. Bulldawg only stated what everyone on this board has been saying. This is coming from your own people. I will not allow this board to let me get personal with Claflin because thats what everyone wants to see. The sad thing about it is that you fell for it. "

Message to Bulldawg wrote on Jun 14, 2007 5:02 PM:

" If these girls signed with SCSU, they would have made the T&D too. It just so happens the only thing worth mentioning about SCSU basketball is the women's program hasn't had a winning record in five years (3 since 1993) and the men's team did more than enough to disgrace themselves this season. Now that's worth a headline. You must be an H-K-T graduate. "

not in the loop wrote on Jun 14, 2007 4:41 PM:

" it's obvious that the orangeburg click has struck twice this week. all the talent that o-w has around that school you have that one kid who I have not seen catch a pass in two years and the young lady who didn't play that much and the other kid from the basketball team.(if he averaged 12 pts a game I didn't see them (played in a weak confence. "

Claflinbro wrote on Jun 14, 2007 1:24 PM:

" Even i dont get this. She's a great kid but why would you recruit a lady that was a backup.Claflin that wasn't smart at all. "

old school wrote on Jun 14, 2007 8:51 AM:

" I have watched Claflin and State basketball for a loooong time(trust me) it is not a knock on local talent but talent everywhere has fallen off. The youth these days have so much to contend with that they do not focus and practice as they should. I have been to State and Claflin games in the 90's where you didn't know who was going to win but the game would be exciting and the gym was packed no matter where you played. This is not a knock on Coach woodard i figure he is working with what he has, but Coach Guydon recruited locally and won conference championships or was always in the running. He had Simpson from Edisto who I watched from his freshman year until his senior year and I knew he could have played at the next level easily. He also had Tavarus Mack from Bowman who did well. A couple of kids from bamberg, St. George, Calhoun County also. It is hard for small schools to get big fish because they want the glory that comes from going to big schools. If they don't have grades then maybe they will consider smaller schools at that point. We just have to support the kids that are trying to do something positive and hope that the coaches also make them productive young men and women in life. "

Bulldawg wrote on Jun 14, 2007 8:37 AM:

" Once again Claflin has made the paper for signing subpar or backup players for their basketball teams. Nothing personal towards the players but for their to be a big deal made of their signings is ridiculus. Lasaundra Barron was a backup player, a "BACKUP" not a starter. A guess that being a local player make you a good player to the T&D. "

Benedict 1906 wrote on Jun 13, 2007 5:48 PM:

" I agree with all the other post. Benedict has a great team, they won the SIAC. Claflin is a joke, this young guy has no business playing College basketball. 5'10 shooting guard wouldn't make Voorhees, Allen and Morris College teams. "

Benedict wrote on Jun 13, 2007 4:30 PM:

" Benedict is winning its conference year after year. Claflin is not winning jack. "

USC4life wrote on Jun 12, 2007 12:08 PM:

" Comments have been made. You just dont post them. He's a subpar player going to a subpar school. They need a new coach and better recruits. Benedict college is better than Claflin. "

Dee wrote on Jun 12, 2007 10:13 AM:

" Claflin needs to go after bigger fish. Stop trying to please the community because it will not bring W's to Claflin. Is this the best you can do. Here goes another subpar season. "

Feeder Camp wrote on Jun 12, 2007 10:09 AM:

" Claflin, your entire roster is going to look like OW. I applaud them for given this kid a chance to get an education. What are we becoming a feeder school for OW. Coach Woodard is not a great coach. We need to go after the big catch and not just local players. All this will do is spike our attendance an extra 50 people. We need better players if we are going to get over the hump. "
