ELLOREE – The Elloree United Methodist Church Choir will present a patriotic musical event at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 29, in the Robert Holman parking lot next to the old depot in Elloree.

“Bring a lawn chair or blanket,” said Shirley Brandenburg of Elloree United Methodist Church.

The celebration will feature patriotic music performed by the choir, a cake drawing, fireworks and food vendors. A parade of 50 children representing each of the states will also take place.

The event is open to the public, and admission is free. In the event of rain, the celebration will be moved to an alternate location, which is yet to be determined.

For more information, call Brandenburg at 803-897-2315 or Elloree Town Hall at 803-897-2821.

The Tams to perform at Bamberg celebration

Special to The T&D

BAMBERG – The Bamberg Citywide July 4th Celebration will feature well-known band The Tams in concert followed by a spectacular fireworks display on Wednesday, July 4, at the Ness Sports Complex.

The Tams have been entertaining and thrilling audiences for over 40 years with hits such as “What Kind of Fool” and “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy.” Known as both The Tams and The Joe Pope Tams, this legendary group of entertainers includes Charles Pope (founder, original member and brother of the late Joe Pope), Little Redd Cottle, Joe Jones, Robert Arnold and Reginald Preston.

The concert is sponsored by the city of Bamberg and the Board of Public Works, with fireworks donated by local industries Phoenix Specialty Manufacturing Co. and Tobul Accumulator.

The gates of the Ness Sports Complex will open for the event at 6:30 p.m. Local musicians Dave Garrick and David Cooler will perform beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Tams will perform at 8:15 p.m., and the professional fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Fort Jackson to light it up at Torchlight Tattoo

Special to The T&D

COLUMBIA – Fort Jackson’s annual celebration of America’s independence, the Torchlight Tattoo, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 4, at Hilton Field.

This year’s formal ceremony begins at 8 p.m. and features a concert by the 282nd Army “Victory” Band, followed by a cannon and flag salute to each state and territory of the United States at 9 p.m. and a 30-minute fireworks display.

The tattoo is deeply rooted in military history and signifies the time of the musical call for civilian establishments to turn off the taps, and for soldiers to make their torch-lit walk back to their encampments to retire for the evening. In this usage, the word tattoo comes from the Dutch “doe den taptoe” meaning “to turn off the taps.”

Visitors should plan to arrive early for the best seats and parking and can enter the installation through any gate. Drivers must show a valid driver’s license or military ID card.

Food and drink concessions and children’s entertainment will be available at Hilton Field beginning at 4 p.m. Pets, alcoholic beverages and personal fireworks are not permitted. Guests can bring lawn chairs and blankets, but plenty of bleacher and main grandstand seating will be available this year.

For more information, call 803-751-6719, 803-751-7650 or 803-751-7659.

Carowinds to present an evening of food, fun and fireworks

Special to The T&D

CHARLOTTE – Celebrate Independence Day with a dazzling fireworks display at “Nights of Fire: A Skytower Spectacular,” as the sky above Carowinds is illuminated once again this July 4th at 10 p.m.

“Nights of Fire: A Skytower Spectacular” is a one of kind fireworks display, partially launched from the top of the Carolina Skytower. This tradition began four years ago when the park first used the Skytower in its fireworks display as a unique concept among 4th of July shows in the Carolinas.

“Nights of Fire” uses more than 1,000 shells to paint the sky with a rainbow of colors. Several hundred special effect shots illuminate the Carolina Skytower at different times during the 25-minute program.

The Carolina Skytower, one of the Park’s original attractions, rises to a height of 320 feet. At the top of the tower, riders are able to view a breathtaking, 360-degree panorama of the 108-acre theme park, and both North and South Carolina.

“Nights of Fire” is arranged by Melrose Pyrotechnics, Inc., located in Catawba. The event is synchronized to patriotic pop favorites including “Proud to be an American” and “Coming to America,” traditional songs such as “Grand Old Flag” and many more “red, white, and blue” medleys.

As a special July 4 treat, guests can attend “Endless Summer on Ice.” The show normally is off on Wednesdays during the summer, but will be presented especially for the July 4 holiday.

Also on July 4, guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat Fourth of July picnic in the Southside Picnic Pavilion from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes fried chicken, hot dogs, baked beans, potato chips, Coca-Cola beverages and ice cream. Picnic tickets are $15 for an adult ticket, $10.50 for Junior/Senior and $11 for season pass holders.

“Nights of Fire: A Skytower Spectacular” is free with park admission. For a complete operating schedule, visit www.carowinds.com.

" why do people have to go 30-50 miles away to enjoy free fireworks shows? Orangeburg is slack .We pay taxes and expect our towns to provide enjkoyable entertainment! "

" Since when is Fort Jackson and Carowinds in the "region"? This story looks like a blatant attempt at trying to make the city look bad for cancelling the fireworks. "
