Miss Charleston wins Miss SC pageant
By The Associated Press Sunday, July 08, 2007SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Crystal Alicia Garrett, a 21-year-old University of South Carolina student representing Charleston, won the Miss South Carolina pageant Saturday night.
Garrett had won evening gown and talent preliminary competitions, singing "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from the musical "Sunset Boulevard." She also won the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium overall talent winner award.
Garrett wins a $20,000 college scholarship and will represent the state in the Miss America pageant.
"I can't believe it," a tearful Garrett said after her crowning.
Garrett, who has asthma, says the crown will let her pursue her platform, Preparing Empowered Asthmatic Kids.
Last year, she competed as Miss Lexington and was a top 10 finalist.
First runner-up was Miss Upstate Amber Finley and second runner-up was Miss Columbia Anna Perry, also a preliminary talent winner.
Miss Charleston Southern University Chicora Heyward, a preliminary swimsuit winner, was the third runner-up and Miss Capital City Morgan Dampier, another preliminary talent winner was fourth runner-up.
Lauren Lytle, Miss Greenville Teen, is the new Miss South Carolina Teen. The 17-year-old from Inman wins a $5,000 savings bond and an opportunity to compete nationally in the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant.
