Playoffs to begin tonight - Post 4 meets West Ashley at Mirmow Field

The Orangeburg Post 4 American Legion baseball team will open the playoffs against West Ashley tonight at Mirmow Field.

Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Post 4 head coach Frank Leysath said he knows little about West Ashley heading into the series.

“I’ve heard they have two good pitchers, but that is about it,” he said. “I’m going to call Hilton Head’s coach, Randy McGarvey, to see if I can find out some more.”

Post 4 will try to answer West Ashley’s strong pitching with Josh Strock. Strock, a product of Edisto High School, did not figure in as a starter at the beginning of the season, but has emerged as the team’s ace, according to Leysath, going 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA this season.

“He has pitched good in every ball game,” Leysath said. “He deserves the start.

“Trent Still threw four innings down in St. George, and he struck out eight,” he added. “So, it’s very possible that Trent may be one of the starting pitchers in the playoff series. And, we may also go with Clay Dewberry, Brad Felder and Murray Smith.”

The series will be best-of-five, with Tuesday’s game scheduled to be played at West Ashley High School, Wednesday’s at Mirmow, Thursday’s (if necessary) at West Ashley and Friday (again if necessary) at Mirmow.

The games at West Ashley will begin at 7 p.m. Games at Mirmow start at 7:30 p.m.
