The 89-year-old injured when his car was hit by a Norfolk Southern train Tuesday morning has died.

Jerry Welfare of Bramble Lane died Tuesday night, apparently as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident, according to Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Chief Wendell Davis.

Welfare’s 2002 Buick Century was struck after it became stuck between the crossing arm barriers on Peasley Street. The vehicle was hit with such force that it crossed the four lanes of Magnolia Street and stopped on the sidewalk in front of Claflin University.

" This is so sad. Mr. Welfare and Mrs. Welfare are real kind people. My condolences go to the family. "
