Post 4 blasts Georgetown
By EMERY GLOVERT&D Sports Writer Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Orangeburg Post 4 got its offense going early Tuesday, and went on to even its second-round playoff series against Georgetown with a 14-6 win at Mirmow Field.
Post 4 got things started in the bottom of the first when Cal Cannon doubled to left. After advancing to third on a passed ball, he scored on a single to center by Trent Still giving Post 4 a 1-0 advantage. Derrick Still would follow with a walk. Chase Bell brought in Trent Still and Orangeburg had a 2-0 lead early, and when all was said and done Orangeburg had a 5-0 lead after just one inning of play.
Post 4 had a bit of a scare in the top of the second when Chris Knight hit a line drive off the knee of Post 4 starter Clay Dewberry. Dewberry went down, but there was no major damage, and he was able to stay in the game.
Georgetown was able to get going in the third inning with a lead-off double to the left-center gap by Cody Byrdic. Byrdic came home all the way from first on a throwing error by Trent Still after a strikeout, which also allowed Levi George to reach first. After Dewberry gave up a one-out walk to Kevin Rufus, George scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Vick to make the score 5-2. Rufus scored on a single to right by J. D. Glisson making the score 5-3. Trey Altman then tied the game 5-5 with a two-run homer to right field before the inning came to a close.
Orangeburg struggled to produce runs until the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Rick Boyles came through with a bunt single to bring in Felder to take a 6-5 lead. Cal Cannon followed that bunt with a sacrifice bunt to score Sanders to increase the Post 4 lead to 7-5. Trent Still's infield single scored Brandon Berry and capped the scoring run to end the inning with Orangeburg on top 8-5.
"It feels great to know that you have an offense that is always behind you and will always put up runs for you no matter what happens," Dewberry said.
From that point on, Dewberry shut down the Georgetown offense. He pitched a complete game allowing six runs and 11 hits while walking one and striking out three.
"Dewberry has been fantastic," Leysath said. " He hits his spots. I couldn't ask for anything better."
Orangeburg's offensive attack would not stop. Cannon reached first with a one-out single. After two straight walks, Cannon and Trent Still scored on a single to center by Larry Fogle to make the score 10-5. Post 4 would tack on four more runs in the eighth.
"When we bring our A-game, we have a competitive ball club," Leysath said after the game.
With the series tied 1-1, Orangeburg will make the trip to Waccamaw High this afternoon hoping to take Game three from Georgetown. The game will start at 7:45 p.m.
