Post 105 opts out of playoffs

The St. George American Legion Post 105 baseball team lost its playoff series to Goose Creek, but the opportunity to advance was there for the taking.

According to Post 105 head coach Carlton Peele, Goose Creek's head coach turned the team in after finding out that some of his players were also playing in another league.

The American Legion Baseball rule book states, "Once tournament play has begun (District Tournament up and through American Legion World Series) the Department Baseball Chairman cannot grant permission to participate in non-Legion sanctioned athletic events, baseball tournaments, exhibition games, showcases or combines."

Because the players participated in another league during tournament play, they were deemed ineligible and St. George was awarded the opportunity to play against Florence in the second round. However, the St. George players had already turned in uniforms and the majority of the roster made preparations to enjoy the remainder of their summer.

"I didn't want to go into a series with half of the team," Peele said. "We lost our series and we're just going to take this one on the chin."

With the disqualification of Goose Creek and the forfeiture of St. George, Florence will advance to the state tournament.
