Police investigate burglaries in Bamberg

BAMBERG – A number of burglaries are being investigated by Bamberg police.

The back door of a Carlisle Street home was kicked in, and the house was ransacked on July 27 by an unknown person, according to a Bamberg Police Department incident report.

The owner discovered that a wedding band and a camcorder had been taken, it was reported. A safe had also been removed from the home and was later found in woods behind the residence.

The total value of the stolen items and the door was $1,150.

A Smoak Street home was also burglarized by an unknown person and $300 worth of items stolen on July 27, according to police reports. Entry was gained by forcing open the back door.

B&B Meats in downtown Bamberg was broken into on July 25, according to an incident report. The back door of the business was forced open, and the eating room was trashed. The cash drawer was removed along with $310.

Jones Laundromat on Society Street was vandalized on July 28.Three of the washing machines were damaged with a crow bar or similar object in an attempt to enter the coin boxes. The unknown subject was not successful in removing the coins.

In other reports:

A 44-year-old Columbia man was arrested for driving under the influence and open container on the evening of July 19. An unknown witness gave officers on patrol a heads up on a suspect who had just left a bar very intoxicated. The witness gave a description of the car the man was driving, and police located and followed the man, noting his erratic driving.

Police initiated a traffic stop, and conducted a field sobriety test, which the man failed, and searched the car, finding an open beer can. The man was taken to the county jail and given a Datamaster test, blowing a blood alcohol percent of .24.

Two Orangeburg men were arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, littering and open container. Officers first spotted the men in a truck at the Ness Sports Complex on the evening of July 28. Suspecting something out of the ordinary, officers kept the men under surveillance and saw one of them throw a bottle out of the truck.

The officers followed and stopped the vehicle at Hardees. A strong smell of alcohol was noted, and the officers noticed several cans of malt liquor inside the truck. Upon checking the vehicle, officers fund a large bag of marijuana and a scale.

The men were placed in the Bamberg County Detention Center.

A Sidney Park man was charged with assault and battery after he hit his 36-year-old cousin. Several witnesses told police when they arrived at the cousin’s Calhoun Street address that the 34-year-old man slapped the woman down and pulled a knife on a bystander who tried to help the woman. The July 15 incident is under investigation.

Threatening letters and phone calls landed a Village Court man in jail on July 25.ˇPolice were asked to meet with the 46-year-old victim who said she received phone calls in which the subject threatened her and cursed over the phone. The victim also said she received threatening letters from the man. A warrant was signed, and the man was arrested for unlawful use of the telephone.
