Pain management classes offered to healthcare professionals
Tuesday, August 07, 2007United Hospice of the Midlands is offering free pain management classes to healthcare professionals Aug. 14-16 at the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce.
Two levels of classes will be offered, one geared toward nurses and one for social workers, certified nursing assistants and other allied health positions. Contact hours and continuing education units will be offered to licensed professionals.
Class schedule is as follows:
* Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 14-15 -- 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- Pain Management for Nurses. This class is designed for professionals eager to increase their pain management knowledge. Nurses receive 11.1 contact hours from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for attending both classes.
* Thursday, Aug. 16 -- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- Pain Management 101. This class is designed for CNAs, social workers, case managers or anyone else interesting in learning more about pain and pain management. Hospital case managers will receive six contact hours through the American Academy of Case Managers, and CNAs will receive five continuing education hours.
Susan Prather, RN, BSN, MA, C, CHPN, will be the featured instructor. Prather has been a nurse for 37 years with a background in pediatric and sickle cell nursing. For the past 10 years, she has been the hospice nurse consultant/clinical nurse specialist and pain management consultant for Pruitt Corporation, United Clinical Services. Prather is certified in pain management from the ANCC and is a certified hospice and palliative care nurse.
