The experience of a lifetime
By Warren B. Ritter, Special to The T&D Saturday, August 11, 2007Wow.
Such a small word describes the overwhelming feeling that I have come to realize is pure, raw astonishment.
As you know, I was selected to attend the American Legion Boys Nation program. I am one of only 98 young men to partake of this wonderful program and one of two chosen from S.C. This program offers so much to us young men -- from meeting our respective representatives and senators to shaking hands with the President of the United States. As for me personally, I have taken from Boys Nation the sense of brotherhood and pride in America.
Boys Nation instills in all attendees a new level of patriotism that many will never attain. The American Legion puts major importance on remembering the fallen soldiers and emphasizing the importance of honoring those in combat.
Because of Boys Nation, I have also had the chance to meet many of our futures leaders. The other 97 men that were there are extremely capable young men who believe in fairness and, above all, truth. The caliber of the young leaves me assured that our future is in great hands.
During the week, we visited Arlington Cemetery, the White House, National Wall, and even the Greenbelt Post. Overall, the experience will forever be in my heart. I would like to thank God for allowing me the opportunity and everyone at OP who continued to show and give support.
I thank the American Legion for allowing me to participate and everyone that attended Palmetto Boys State '07 at USC. To the youth of tomorrow -- believe that you can, and you will.
