Southern Piece Makers Quilting Club in Orangeburg completed this year's community service project -- lap quilts for residents of Orangeburg Nursing Home and Christmas stockings for deployed troops with the National Guard's Orangeburg 218th Brigade Company B/163rd Battalion -- last week at its bimonthly meeting at the Clemson Extension office in Orangeburg. The women, who started as a group of beginning quilters, will celebrate their 10th anniversary on April 8, 2008. Members volunteer each month to present educational lessons on topics such as food allergies, locally grown foods and wildlife control. Southern Piece Makers exhibits quilts annually at the Orangeburg County Fair, and proceeds from the raffle of a "Carol's Block" design quilt in 2008 will be donated to the Orangeburg County Community of Character effort. This year's group project is a "Garden Mosaic" design, and the entire quilt is comprised of hexagons. Instructor for the "Garden Mosaic" is senior quilter George Ann Rash. The group's motto is "Dedication, Education and Service. Southern Piece Makers Quilting Club members are Shirley Hubbard, Ruth Robinson, Sara Funderburk, Geneva Roache, Linda Kaster, Shirley Watson, Bernice Hubbard, Rivannah Jones, Janie Sims, Jeanette Jeffrey, Willie Mae Dixon and Barbara Chavous.
