Holly Hill Academy 14, Andrew Jackson Academy 12
EHRHARDT -- Austin Veronee scooped up a fumble and returned it 87 yards for the go-ahead score in Holly Hill Academy's 14-12 win over Andrew Jackson Academy Friday.
"Andrew Jackson played a heck of a game, and we were lucky to get out with a win," HHA head coach Don Shelley said. "We made so many mistakes tonight. I really felt like Andrew Jackson deserved to win the game, but I'm not willing to give it back. They played with a lot of emotion, and you hate to see them play that hard and lose."
Veronee's scoop and score came with Holly Hill (1-0) trailing 12-8 with 12:09 to go in the game. Holly Hill Academy took the lead early in the game on a 14-yard run by Clint Westbury. Lanier Cason ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 HHA in the first quarter.
Andrew Jackson (0-2) answered with a 17-yard scoring pass from Chris Long to Ryan Fender in the second quarter to pull to within 8-6. Before the half, Long returned a punt 75 yards to put AJA up 12-6, setting the stage for Veronee's second half heroics.
Lanier Cason led HHA with 104 yards on 23 carries. Westbury was 3 of 7 passing for 48 yards. On defense, Chance Shelley had 10 tackles for HHA and James Bull had nine.

For Andrew Jackson, Ryan Fender had 10 carries for 50 yards, Bryan Bishop had 12 carries for 33 yards and Chris Long had 13 carries for 39 yards.
Blackville-Hilda 35, North 0
NORTH -- Blackville-Hilda opened its season with a 35-0 win over the North Eagles.
Quenten Fulmer got the scoring started early for the Hawks (1-0) when he hauled in a 39-yard scoring pass from quarterback Darrell White. Wayne Hutto added the extra point and Blackville-Hilda led 7-0 with 8:39 to play in the first quarter.
The onslaught continued in the second quarter, going up 13-0 on a 7-yard run by Desmond Brown with 11:47 to go before the half. Joe Thomas then scored on a 3-yard run, and Hutto added the extra point to make it 20-0 at the 5:10 mark of the second quarter. Shakeem Armstrong then capped the first half off for the Hawks by scoring on a 3-yard run. The extra point was blocked, but the Hawks led 26-0.
White scored on an 11-yard run and Hutto added the extra point to put the Hawks up 33-0 with 8:53 to go in the third, and Blackville-Hilda recorded a safety at the 3:51 mark in the third making it 35-0.
North drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
Woodland 43, Bethune-Bowman 15
ROWESVILLE -- Word out of Woodland all summer is that freshman starting quarterback Robert Smith was going to be pretty good.
Friday night, Smith proved those rumors to be, at least a little, true as he guided Woodland to a 43-15 win over Bethune-Bowman.
"The difference maker was Robert Smith," Bethune-Bowman head coach Robert Hemby said. "I thought he delivered the ball well, and our secondary bit on a lot of combo routes and gave up a couple of foolish touchdowns. A few were on third and fourth down, but I am proud of our guys. They played hard ... even in defeat. But, the big play is what did us in."
For Bethune-Bowman, Saquan Mayes had nine carries for 96 yards and a touchdown, and Danny Berry carried 11 times for 78 yards and a score.
Calhoun County 56, Lake Marion 27
SANTEE -- David Sims had 252 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns as Calhoun County cruised to a 56-27 win over the Lake Marion Gators Friday.
On offense, Sims rushed for 192 yards and three scores and passed for another 60 yards and a score. On defense, Alshon Jeffrey shined for the Saints, intercepting three passes and returning two of them for touchdowns. He also scored on a 45-yard pass reception.
"They had one game up on us," said Saints' head coach Walter Wilson. "Once we got used to the speed of the game ... we didn't punt all night. Whenever you can score 56 points in the first game ... that's a good first game."
Calhoun County (1-0) had 425 yards of total offense. Lake Marion (0-2) has given up 111 points in its first two games of the season.
Calhoun Academy 20, WW King 14
BATESBURG -- Andrew Robinson connected with Shandon Kemmerlin on a 55-yard scoring pass with 1:33 to play to give Calhoun Academy a 20-14 win over WW King Friday.
Calhoun Academy took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Jimmy Reed in the first quarter. WW King came back to tie the game, but Kemmerlin broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run to put Calhoun on top 14-7 in the second quarter.
The scored stayed 14-7 until WW King tied it with 3:30 to go in the game.
"I'm very proud of my guys for buckling down when it was time for that," said Calhoun Academy head coach Adam Jarecki. "We played hard. King as a good football team, and they ran right at us hard."
For Calhoun, Kemmerlin had five carries for 88 yards, C.T. Yourk had six carries for 64 yards and David Yenny had 10 carries for 67 yards. On defense for the Cavaliers, Labe Chappell was in on 16 tackles and Mack Irick had seven tackles. The Cavaliers (1-0) had 335 yards of total offense.
Bowman Academy 38, Jeff Davis 0
BLACKVILLE -- Bowman Academy jumped on top with three first quarter scores and never looked back in defeating non-conference rival Jefferson Davis Academy 38-0 in SCISAA action Friday night.
The Bulldogs, 2-0, scored in the opening period on a 62-yard touchdown run by Jordan Gunnells with Wesley Bilton carrying in the two-point conversion.
Next came a 44-yard scoring pass from Tripp Looper to Gunnells. The conversion failed.
Looper followed that with a 4-yard run with Gunnells supplying the conversion.
The second period saw Gunnells score again, this time on a 4-yard run to make the halftime score 30-0.
Bowman scored for a final time in the third period on a 54-yard Run by Bilton. Macon Till caught the conversion pass.
Bilton rushed 96 yards in the game, with Gunnells accounting for 79 yards. Looper was 5-7 passing for 98 with one touchdown toss.
On defense, Wesley Collier had nine tackles, three assists and a fumble recovery. Bilton had six tackles, one assist and an interception.
Bowman has a bye in the coming week. JDA, 0-2, plays at Clarendon Hall.
Augusta Christian 49, Orangeburg Prep 7
The No. 2 ranked Augusta Christian Lions handed Orangeburg Prep its second loss of the season Friday night 49-7 over the Indians in Orangeburg.
The Indians were led by Mason Toole who carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards while Michael Williamson caught three passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. On defense the Indians were led by Ryan Salley, four tackles; John Brunson, three tackles, one assist and Hunter Faulling, four tackles and one assist.
For the Lions Tyler Bourdo led the offense with five carries for 51 yards and four touchdowns while Jay Harmon carried the ball seven times for 66 yards and one score. Defensively Patrick Dross and Travis Cerasuolo each scored off of interceptions.
The Lions open the season 1-0 while the Indians fall to 0-2. OPS will try to get its first win of the season Friday when they play host to rival Calhoun Academy.
Thomas Heyward 56, Dorchester Academy 0
RIDGELAND -- Thomas Heyward welcomed Dorchester Academy to the regular season with a 56-0 thumping Friday night.
Thomas Heyward (1-0) forced Dorchester Academy (0-1) to punt eight times.
Scott Creel led Dorchester with seven carries for 18 yards. On defense, Evan Mizzell had seven tackles.
