REA Contracting earns top award
Saturday, September 01, 2007REA Contracting has earned the second annual "2007 Interstate Category Award" for the interstate rehab and cross-slope correction of the I-20 westbound lane from mile post 22.7 to mile post 37.2 in Aiken County.The award was presented at the SCAPA Annual Summer Conference at the Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
To qualify for the award, a pavement must meet strict criteria and demonstrate hot-mix asphalt's long-life characteristics, excellence in design, quality in construction and value to the traveling public. The projects represented must have been completed within the calendar year of 2006. The projects were judged by Chad Hawkins, SCDOT bituminous engineer, Charles Eleazer, SCDOT assistant construction engineer, and David Law, FHwA pavement and materials engineer.
Rea Contracting's award-winning pavement is a 17.6-mile stretch of interstate in the westbound lane of I-20 in Aiken County. Construction started in June 2005 and was completed in June 2006. Traffic was maintained throughout the project. The structure included 14,701 tons of Open Graded Friction Course, 34,738 tons of Superpave 12.5mm mix, 1,807 tons of Type 4 Surface, and 32,857 tons of Superpave 19mm mix.
Thomas Barrak Jr. said, "The Aiken I-20 rehabilitation project turned out to be a complete success as a result of the dedication and cooperation between the SCDOT and Rea Contracting LLC. Because of the combined effort and teamwork between SCDOT and Rea Contracting LLC, the specifications and requirements for the project were exceeded. The project is indeed an accomplishment for all involved and will continue to provide quality transportation for the public for years to come. We would like to thank the traveling public for their cooperation and patience during the construction."
