Chapter XIV - Separation from the Swan
By DR. SHINGARA SANDHU, Special to The T&D Sunday, September 02, 2007The prince and the princess nursed the swan back to health but it would take quite some time before the swan would have the power and the wings to fly again. They were on a barren island. There was no food except berries, the bark of trees and leaves. The swan urged them to leave.
The birds and the animals assured the couple that they would take good care of the swan. The couple was convinced that leaving the island was appropriate. But the problem was how to journey out from this island, from where they could not even see shoreline? At the daily urging of the swan they finally decided to leave and started building a raft out of wood logs, and straw. One sunny morning they bade farewell to the swan, climbed onto their raft and started drifting on the surface of the ocean water. They were at the mercy of the ocean.
The raft was not strong enough to face the rigors of the sea. After only a few hours the raft disintegrated and they were left hanging aimlessly in the ocean water. Finally even they could not hang got separated by a big mountain-sized wave. They drifted all night in different directions. Eventually both of them landed unconscious on the shore, but at different locations.
