Friends, family continue to rally around cancer patient
By JAN JORDAN, T&D Correspondent Monday, September 03, 2007ST. MATTHEWS -- Friends and family gathered at Buddy Lowder's business, Suzy's, in St. Matthews on Aug. 25, to raise funds to help with lung cancer patient Bill Williams' medical expenses.
It was the latest community gesture of support and encouragement for Williams, a popular musician who continues to play music and sing with his friends whenever possible. Those who know him say Williams is happiest when singing and jamming with long-time friends.
One of fund-raising events was a poker run featuring more than 200 motorcyclists. In addition, barbecue plates were sold. Cooking the barbecue were Bobby Joe Jackson and Billy Walling of St. Matthews, and Steve Livingston and L.W. Rast of St. Matthews cooked the hash. T-shirts and CDs were sold as well, and a live auction was held. Other events included an antique car show and a dunking booth.
"I'm feeling pretty good and doing well," Williams said. "I appreciate y'all coming out."
Some of the performers accompanying Williams on stage were Chad Howell of Lexington, a member of the Driftin' Outlaws band; Johnny Shifner of Wagener, Glenn Rucker of North, Joe Rogers of Orangeburg and John Morris of St. Matthews.
Assisting with the fund-raiser were David and Carol Barton, Clifton Waltz, Rose, Davis, Dode Prickett, Jimmy and Cheryl Price and members of Bill Williams' family.
A number of area businesses helped sponsor the event.
Other fund-raisers for Williams are being planned for the near future.
