The Orangeburg County Planning Commission has given preliminary approval to the development of the Big Cypress subdivision near Eutawville.

Developer Elias Tupper of Tupper Landscape and Clearing is planning a multi-phased development of about 215 acres in the subdivision, which will include lot sizes ranging from half an acre to one acre.

The subdivision, which is off Moncks Corner Road and Belvedere Drive, will be developed with site-built homes surrounding a 76-acre lake. The subdivision borders the Live Oak Cove subdivision and the Fountain Lake subdivision.

The Big Cypress subdivision was formerly part of the Belvedere subdivision, but it was never developed. Tupper purchased the land in 2005.

Commissioners, who met Tuesday, also unanimously approved a list of nine road names for the expanded subdivision. None of the residents currently in the Belvedere subdivision will require an address change.

In other matters, commissioners were told follow-up was still being done on some concerns raised at the August planning commission meeting regarding the county's proposed zoning ordinance. Commissioners will meet again Sept. 20.
