Council approves cable TV franchise renewal
By VIC WHETSTONE, T&D Correspondent Saturday, September 29, 2007DENMARK -- First-reading approval was given to renewal of a franchise for Atlantic Broadband cable television services during Denmark City Council's September meeting. The new franchise renewal rate of 5 percent is up from the present fee of 3 percent.
Also during the meeting, the city's monthly financial report indicated all accounts payable and notes payable are current. All payroll taxes were paid in a timely manner, it was reported. The water and sewer fund had an increase of $193.64, while the general fund showed expenses in excess of revenues of $100,781.23.
In other business, Denmark Fire Chief Marc Waltz said an open house will be held at the new fire station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. Waltz encouraged everyone to attend to tour their new facilities.
Denmark Police Chief Leroy Grimes reported that for the period of Aug. 21 to Sept. 17, at total of 34 case files were created which included assault and battery, burglary, criminal domestic violence, traffic collisions, driving under suspension, malicious injury to personal property, driving under the influence, disorderly conduct, fire (arson), minor in possession of beer, unlawful use of utilities, armed robbery and failure to stop for blue lights.
Grimes also reported that Officers Thomas Collins and Thomas Jason Smith are in training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
In addition, Mayor Carrie Simmons announced that the Denmark Christmas Parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 8.
